Default Colchester STUDENT , 6"" x 24" .

It is " All Change " with lathes around here this week .

I am now selling a nice Colchester Student Mk 1 , or ' Round Top ' on behalf of a friend .

General condition is good , but it is a little sad cosmetically due to sitting unused for a long time . All the bed and slideways are good and have never been rusted , but the control handles and wheels need a bit of a shine with Scotchbright .

See the " Lathes for Sale " website , as per my previous advert , for a general description of this model .

This Student is a straight bed model , which is to say that it does not have a gap bed . It is unusual in that it has a Matrix CLUTCH , factory fitted from new , which makes it VERY much more usable , and especially so with a single phase motor . Also fitted is a TAPER TURNING attachment , missing only the anchor rod and clamp , which could be made and fitted in a couple of hours , even without a pattern or drawing .

Usual Norton type screwcutting gearbox with Imperial and Metric pitches . Sliding and surfacing power feeds .

Unusually , the bed is HARDENED . There is also a REAR TOOL POST fitted . The main tool post is a 4 way . There is a bed stop , 6" - 3 jaw , 8" - 4 jaw , 3 point steady and travelling steady . 3 phase motor fitted , but easily converted . Colchester cabinet base with cupboard and drawer , and swarf tray and suds tank . The suds pump has been thieved long ago , as is so often the case .

I have just given this lathe a good clean this morning , and everything works . The gearboxes do not even leak . I ran it up when we unexpectedly bought it a couple of months ago , and it was smooth , and as quiet as a round top ever is . All systems worked . Usual disclaimer about condition of electrics , which is to say that you must accept that they are second hand and untested as to performance and safety .

Ring me on 01327 - 87 77 86 to discuss .

Delivery may be arranged .

£ 550 , hard price .

Made a 4/5 pin adaptor lead and ran this lathe up this afternoon .

It is extraordinarily quiet for a round top , and much smoother by virtue of having a flat belt drive from the motor to the clutch . The clutch works smoothly , and can be feathered . The motor is a 2.1/2 horse 3 phase , and looks original . The chucks look very good , the external 3-jaws look unused , and the chuck locking ring shows only small signs of use .

The only thing not working is the reverse switch , which has been disconnected , both mechanically and electrically , but is still in situ . The Colchester switch panel has been replaced with a conventional starter , which works perfectly .

In short , this is just what The Wife wants for Christmas .
