Ok.

Next, possibly dull, question. Is the stud definitely 5/8" outside diameter?

If we ignore the UNC bit - 5/8 x 14 is a standard 5/8" BSF. The latter are readily available as plain high tensile nuts. The only problem is that BSF is a 55 degree thread, not 60 degree as in a UNC form.
