Llandudno 2012 Saturday

We normally stay over the weekend but the weather forecast was poor so we didn't book. However, Saturday looked promising so we were up and off by 06:00 and were eating a bacon roll on the front at 07:30 in the cold sunshine. It stayed fine all day, you could see the I.O.M. from the top of the Orme. We went on the field to look at the trucks, then around the town chatting to old friends while they prepared for the procession. As we stood taking photo's, some of the engine men were waving at us and the little crowd around us thought we were experts and we ended up giving a commentary on each engine that passed by. In the evening we were invited to go on the road run to Conwy on the 1948 Foden 2 stroke bus, calling for fish and chips on the way back. Overall a great day out.

I was thinking the same, its a shame!

Timothy Hackworth Jr 6th May 2012 08:34 PM

There was a reason posted last year...but it still seems a bit odd.

w6cloggs 6th May 2012 08:35 PM

I have asked it seems there is no steel wheels allowed in the town so they will not have my Aveling on strakes !!! but then Allen Eaton Fowler went so I think it depends who you are and what you have !!!!

Timothy Hackworth Jr 6th May 2012 08:44 PM

Have to see if Alistair or Tony would be allowed in with rubber boots on their rollers...

davidje 6th May 2012 08:47 PM

I have never understood the set up at Llandudno. I can understand that they don't want steel on the roads but there is a "separate" rally on the fields above the town where the trucks, tractors, stationaries, stalls etc are located. It is a big field and it would be great to see some steam engines on there, be it rollers, other steel shod engines, more minatures and so on.

I don't know if it's the same committee or not but I'm sure for the size of the town, more could be done.

I also got the impression this year that there were not so many additional 'street theatre' acts.

Maybe someone who exhibits there could comment?

Don't get me wrong, it's a great event but it seems to be lacking given the potential.

I think I caught them all. The Foden 'Victoria' was missing this year but I heard they had a wedding to attend ... . . .

AndynMags 6th May 2012 09:11 PM

i see there is a pic of woodwards little aveling now with the rubber tyre,s taken off, i know it wont be to heavy

AndynMags 6th May 2012 09:22 PM

we use to go for many years with vintage tractors on the field i asked Len ricketts who organises the rally on the field about a friend with his aveling 6 ton roller coming he said the town was not up to him but he was welcome on the field and did not think it would be able to go in the town because of all sorts of problems with underground drians , witch seems daft when you think of a heavy showmans engine

I attended last year with my four inch Foster (on the field) the way I understand it is they are two separate shows with two different titles. The one based in the town centre is the "Victorian Extravaganza Weekend" and the one on the field is the "Transport Extravaganza", both run by different people I gather.

It's the full size engines based in the town centre that have a grand parade, there isn't a parade starting from the showground anymore although the miniatures do have a trundle down the seafront on the Saturday night. It's a great weekend no matter which show you're booked in with. It's not often I unzip the tent at a rally in the morning and look out to sea! Lee

Erm....Don't they use heavy rollers when the roads are being resurfaced !. what's wrong with having a few steam rollers in the parade !.

Cheers

The Club's Aveling or the ''Who Would Have thought it, MY Scaffold bought it!'' Clayton?

I believe there was a small gathering at a pub to publicise the forthcoming rally.

myfanwy 7th May 2012 05:39 PM

It was the the ANGLESEY (note the splling) Aveling going to display in front of Pringles outlet shop advertising our rally in two week time

myfanwy 7th May 2012 05:42 PM

Alan Kelly MY Scaffolding bought two engines that were at one time on Anglesy. I hoping he buy a third if he opens his wallet wider

Brilliant pics once again David, I was there on the sunday and after a long walk round the field looking at some superb trucks etc, and having talked to numerous people, I then headed into town, having not been for a couple of years, I was shocked by the amount of fairground rides, they were crammed in every street, whilst the steam section was put in a side street or out side the pub, I think the original idea of a Victorian weekend has long gone, what a great shame, I remember the whole of Mostyn Street crammed with engines and organs for its whole length.

How come?

buzzy bee 7th May 2012 07:40 PM

Just Returned from the weekend at Llandudno, and it was a goes weekend, the weather has held off all weekend as it turns out!

One of the Attractions of Llandudno to me over other steam rallies is it is a bit different being in the town, rather than on a field. If you look at one of Dave's pictures, the black and white one, what a wonderful image it is, in a victorian town. It could be made even more victorian with various other exhibits, but I still like my weekend in Llandudno every year.

There is a lot of sourness about no rollers, I have a roller, and I know it would not be invited, but hey, there are lots of other rallies it would be made welcome at which I apriciate. There is lots of other interesting exhibits and exhibitors to see/chat to, which make up for it for me.

Anyway thats my oppinion, but then Llandudno is a special place for me anyway. :)

Greaat Pics Davidje, Captured the moment, and I love the black and white one. Hope you enjoyed the ride on the other old passenger carrying vehicle ;)

Cheers

Dave

Timothy Hackworth Jr 7th May 2012 08:18 PM

I'm not sour at all about it Dave, after all, I am 250 miles away and never likely to be invited. I just find it a bit odd and unfortunate that arguably a very important part of the road steam story is not represented.

8_10 Brass Cleaner 7th May 2012 08:33 PM

Its always been a very snobby event. I'm afraid my engines will never go there invite or not.

davidje 7th May 2012 09:35 PM

I looked at the images from 2 years ago and there seemed to be more going on then than there was this year. Some people may feel that these were an important part of the overall ambiance . . ..

i understand the amount of modern rides is due to the cost of the steam boys, road closures and insurance

i have to agree its just a modern fair with a few side attractions now

Glad to see my next door neighbours were there for one day anyway. As for the pier I certainly hope it will change - back to what it used to be - and capable of permitting ships to call. Since 2007 the berthing head has been closed and the Balmoral and more importantly the Waverley cannot berth in Llandudno.

If that does change, and there are proposals afoot - I'll let you know.
