Default South Molton Vintage Rally - 1 June 2013

I went to South Molton rally today with the promise of seeing some new engines (thanks to cocky_1987) and I wasn't disappointed, three Burrell's I've never seen before and an Aveling too.

First up Burrell 3903, Excelsior, belonging to the Dicker family which is coming towards the end of a 15+ year restoration. A fine Burrell engine with the usual individual features, the owners were telling me that they have done most of the restoration themselves:

And their other engine, Wallis & Steevens 7294, The Sheaf of Arrows which was reed combing with Black Jim supervising:

Ruston Proctor 52266, Corn Maiden a regular rally attender in the West and later on did a bit of wood sawing:

An engine I have been waiting for years to see, Burrell Convertible 3381 belonging to the Shambrook Family. The engine was driving a newly restored Stenner & Gunn No 2 saw bench with an enormous trunk (think it was oak) which really made the engine chuff:

The Shambrook family's other engine which was new to me, Aveling & Porter Convertible 8624:

Allchin 3251, Royal Chester which is now local to the area and was looking great in the sunshine:

And a Burrell roller which I hadn't seen before, Burrell 3956 a example of one of Burrell's smaller single cylinders models, this one is fitted with Hossacks scarifier:

Thanks to engine owners and rally organisers. I'll get a further selection of pictures on Steam Scenes at the start of next week.

Hi David, thanks for sharing your photos with us. By the look of things weather was as good at South Molton as it was at the Eden Project in Cornwall - I took the family there as I intend to go to Tavistock Steam fair today!

Regards, Tom - Ivybridge contributor to Vintage Spirit.

Thanks for the great photos David! They really do justice to the hard work that has gone in to getting the Burrell this far!

Those pair of convertibles are really nice. Its nice to see them presented with the smokebox brackets still in place.

Yes it was very much appreciated by me that they moved the engine to a nice position for some photographs, with the Exmoor hills in the background.
