Default Set of Portable Drawings

Looking for a set of drawings for a portable engine. Anything considered. Would like to try and build one as a project.

Charlie.

Default 1.1/2" Dick Simmonds Portable

Sorry I can't help you, but a while back I tried to get hold of a set of drawings for a rather nice 1.1/2" scale portable designed by Dick Simmonds(? spelling?) in the 1960's. Your advert reminded me to keep looking!

There was a Marshall Portable, again 1.1/2" scale, designed by Bill Hughes serialised in the model engineer c.1970's. Drawings are still available from Reeves I believe.

Plenty of full sized engines about to copy!

Good luck with your search, if you get offered a set of Dick Simmonds drawings would appreciate a copy.

Thanks

JW

John haining also drew a 2" scale Ransomes 7nhp engine which you can buy plans for from the people below, but there are probably other. I think I got mine from Xplans or something like that...

There are a couple of pics below of my progress to date. The only casting is the flysheel (for which I made my own pattern). everything else is either machined from solid or fabricated.

And yes, I now know the flywheel is on backwards, so have since turned it around, but not in these photos.

Regards,

Doug Meller

If you are game to do something a bit different then you could try a Fowler portable . Unlike nearly all portables they were built like a traction engine with the cylinder mounted on the barrel . If you chose an appropriate scale you could use the castings and fittings from a Fowler TE miniature design , and with luck you could find the neccessary arrangement drawings in the archive at MERL in Reading .

It might be worth a feasability study ?

I was thinking of doing a 12" scale model, silly I know, but would like to recreate a lost type.

Ah ! Fowler and Burrell and some Ransomes and Wallis drawings at Reading . Clayton drawings at Old Warden . Marshall drawings at ? . Drawings in the Lincolnshire collection . Davidje might have something up his sleeve . There may be some Savage drawings somewhere .There were some interesting things made , like the Wallis single cylinder compound !
