Back to spooked horses, I spoke to a lady from a local riding club about my incident, She said that it's not uncommon, so in Her stables she hangs the odd plastic bag on the fences and similar to get the horses used to them.

The rider is the most vulnerable person , in that they could get thrown with possibly fatal or life changing injuries . We at least , in cars or on engines , are pretty safe . I had my car kicked by a horse many years ago , and the lady rider was very nice about it , saying that the 20 year old horse was reckoned to be bomb proof . With an engine if there is any doubt I park up and offer to lead the horse past , especially with children .
I shall tell the story again , of Michael Salmon , a vet who had ploughed with horses as a boy . He owned five engines . When on an engine he got an unladylike mouthful from the rider . He raised his cap , and said sweetly " Madam , we are both of us mounted upon anachronisms , but I am in control of mine " |

The horse showed her who was the boss and she had to jump off PDQ before being thrown much to the chargrin of myself and my steersman.

I enjoyed my visit last year, especially having a go at steering Southern Queen. Hopefully I'll be able to attend again in a few years' time
