Volute drawbar spring still wanted
I have not had any success in finding either a spring or a complete drawbar but it is likely that there are some out there somewhere.
I am prepared to pay a substantial price to get one so, if you know of one that might be for sale please buy it and pass it on to me for a profit. Thank you. |

We have put a bid on them but, as there is no indication of size I think they are too small. I tried to work out the size of the logo on the backing shelf by looking at adjacent lots and then getting an approximate size from that. It is still worth a punt though and I am very grateful to Nick for the information. I'll let you all know how it goes.

Thanks for the PM, I have been racking my brain. The place I saw volute springs was in the suspension of WW2 american tanks. Shermans. Grants etc etc. Not sure how they work in strength or size terms, but worth a look.

Well, we bought the lot of three springs for better or worse. Another bidder came in which upped the price somewhat, perhaps a TT member? When we get them I'll let you know whether it was a useful purchase or not.

The three springs are usable at 100 mm large diameter and 200 mm long with room for a 32 mm spindle through the centre. Shorter than the 280 mm long original spring we have on one wagon but should still afford sufficient shock protection for the second wagon. They are marked with a NATO identification number which, if it can be traced, may result in similar springs being found. Apparently nearby numbers are also springs.
I'll come back when I have more information. |

A lot of old lifts use volume springs for the car and counterweight buffers in the event of of an over travel situation. New ones are just large coil springs but i guess the trouble is it would be difficult to know when someone is due to replacie or upgrade a lift a new one to and get them to save them to one side.
