Southland Steam Engine Club Road Run
Members of the club decided to go for a summer holiday road run, taking 2 Garrett tractors, a 8hp Burrell, 8 Hp Marshall and Yorkshire wagon.
The trip was 28 km long with 2 stops. On route we stopped off to see a 7 Hp Garrett, still on steel wheels and so couldn't join us on the road and then the crews needed a refreshment stop at the 20 km mark. Leaving Home Returning to base

Hi Gary, Happy New Year. We had 17mm of rain for the first 27 days in December and a lot of drying winds and I was thinking the fire risk would be getting quite high for our road run. Then we had 70mm of rain which was great for us and farmers. Even so we still followed the engines with a water tank and pump. We had a great day for the road run and are getting enough rain to keep the place green although grass growth rates are only half what they should be.
Our next event is the Edendale Crankup which is held the last weekend in January. John.

The "balcony" is just to allow easy access to firewood that is stored at the front of the living van. The owner has plenty of trees for firewood so the engine is usually is steamed on wood which you need plenty of.
The living van in the first photo has the balcony at the back. It was built as a copy of the design of living van that was used in the working days with the Marshall. It was also built by the same builder, 1917 originally and new one in 1984. John

The maroon 4 Hp Garrett in photo 2 was the subject of an article by Roger Hamlin in Old Glory last year.
The green one was made in 1907 and worked in Southland on a chaffcutting run. There is also an early photo of it on road construction works towing a side tipping trailer hauling gravel. John
