I just used S275. I'll tell you at the weekend what there like when I drop the grate Saturday. I put them in before we moved onto Ashby Magna in June. They've done about 150 - 170 Miles on the road with us this year as well as 5 weekends sawing.

Hi can't remember what grade of steel but they are proper job with ribs welded on etc and after a year are like new. Give Nick Noon at statfold a call if you are interested.

We have had a set of steel bars in our Wallis Advance for something in the region of 15 years. Ordinary stock steel from our local stockist, 100mm X 10mm, notched at each end and a 10 MM. tab welded on each end. She does some pretty serious mountaineering in North Wales doing her level best to impersonate a blast furnace and they have stood up really well.

Made the same for the Portable .I welded a tab in the middle to stop the warping .Been in use over 10 years..Scooby...

I have steel bars in my roller for the last 6 years, and so far haven't had any problems, apart from every 2 years I have to straighten them in the press.

On the rare occasion that it happens ,we find a sledge hammer and a concrete driveway suffice

We have been using steel fire bars\ grates in sentinel " vectis knight " for several years
Same grade as used to make log burner baskets
Last about 4 to 5 years and they do get BL....dy hot in sentinel boilers
Last set I made last winter
New steel unit with original cast unit as pattern

Works out one third cost of new cast set
