I've was lead to believe that Fred Carno's army was infact set up as a circus that went to America from England, Mr.Carno took with him Charlie Chaplin and Stan Lorral. I may be wrong and stand to be corrected, but thats what I was lead to believe.

Not quite correct. Karno was a circus artist, comic , impressario and artists manager who mounted package shows for the halls and took troupes of discoveries, his army, like Chaplin and Laurel on tours of the states where they were poached by the fledgling studios.
