Yes you can use Clupets in a piston valve, our Advance has run for the last 20 years with them with excellent results. BUT you have to be very careful when fitting them, the tails can catch in the ports and, as I found out, and you end up tying the motion up in knots. From what I remember of Aveling valve bores they have an abundance of ports and would not be able to take a Clupet ring. I have had very good service from Alan Smith at Clupet and as said above he does ordinary rings as well.
