The Oldest Fowler Plougher Living Van 1868

For sale – Fowler plougher living van number 947 built in 1868, oldest in existence. Last used commercially in about 1895 and then stored from 1895 until 2002 - it missed the twentieth century and two World Wars. It was restored between 2002 and 2004 using many original timbers and original fittings. Original layout mainly preserved – for 4 men and therefore likely to have been supplied with a single engine set and ground anchor. Space for toilet installed behind traditional meat safe. Wheels have been rubbered. Back box and belly box original and sound. 12 volt electric lights and 240 volts socket fitted. It has since been stored in the dry. The front door needs fettling and a repaint. The exterior needs repainting. More information and pictures at request. Located South East Wales. Viewing by arrangement.

As requested – some photos of the interior showing many original features, such as the folding bunks, 19th century stove, meat safe and larder. We do not know the intended use for the hooks around the paraffin lamp. We suspect that these were for storing the road lamps from the engine.


This picture shows the bunks in the folded position for maximum internal space.


There was no evidence of a permanent central table. This is one that we used.
The iron bars across the rear window are original.


These are the four bunks ready to sleep on - one top double and two lower singles.


Upper cupboard is a meat safe. With the lower door the larder. The door to the ‘bathroom’ is not original and can be seen behind the corner larder.
