Default Goldsmith Nov 2013

Few picks from another great weekend down under.
Feel free to add yours if you have any to share.

They have a nice pair of ploughing engines that come out and play when the weather is good.
Not a huge plough but plenty big enough to show how it was done.

I like this one
Beauty and the beasts ?

Couple of close ups of the 2 Fowlers.

What class are they? I thought Zs, but they have Salters? Lovely portable, very unusual.

Yup, both are Z's. The one with a stubby chimney had an oil burner fitted at one point, which was removed later.

Sadly, I can't remember the numbers!

Cheers

The Fowler PEs are both Z7 class built 1920.
15505 (with the wood canopy) is called ‘Archie’ and as I understand is on loan to the Lake Goldsmith Preservation Society by the Victoria Museum. 15504 (with the white canopy) is with a private collector. Neither is from their original pairing. Their partners both scrapped. New to the Water Conservation & Irrigation Commission. If you know more please let me know.

Does anyone know the number of that plough?

Dick, are you sure about that, Fowler ploughing engine pairs as a rule, are numbered with the even number the lowest, the odd number the highest.

surely if they were a genuine pair they would have the same safety valve and gear selector arrangement? as the Z7 with the salter safety valves has a different cylinder top to the other engine. Who knows?

Just to clarify a few details here - and get the numbers right for those keen on numbers....

15505 is the Scienceworks/Museum Victoria engine, with the more traditional timber canopy without side boards and a long funnel. Ably manned by Dave, Peter and someone I don't recognise!

The other Z7 in the photos is of 16720 built 1926 and worked in Tasmania on hydro schemes from 1953 (which is why there's photos of 16719 and 16720 in England). It was noted that the conversion to oil firing was completed by McLaren's works in Leeds.

The balance plough is 11462 of 1914, used for the Murrumbidgee irrigation scheme. From memory, 15499, 15500, 15505 and 15506 were all purchased by the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Authority with one other pair.

These details are in many of the Lake Goldsmith Rally programs

Cheers

Alas I don't usually collect numbers. Just enjoy taking pictures although I did get the Garrett details.
No doubt someone watching will know the details of the Fowlers.
Here is a couple more of the Garrett.

Here is a Clayton Wagon and an Aveling and Porter Roller to enjoy as well.
