FOR SALE – 47738
First Great Western and Network Rail are looking to dispose of the no.2 cab and 1/3rd body shell of former Rail Express Systems locomotive – 47738.
The locomotive is currently residing adjacent to Plymouth ‘North Road’ station, and is housed inside a secure training compound (formally the British Rail parcels building). The loco was previously used as part of a rail safety initiative aimed at local school children.
The successful new owner must also arrange removal and transport costs.
The loco started its life as D1766 in September 1964. In 1971 it gained the number 47171 (allocated to Cardiff Canton Depot); whilst nine years later it became 47592. In its 30th year, it took on its final guise, 47738, and was at this time allocated to Crewe Diesel Depot.
The loco carried two names during its life: COUNTY OF AVON (1983 – 1993) and BRISTOL BARTON HILL (1994 – 2003).
In terms of livery, the loco carried BR Dual Green from new, followed by BR Blue. Into privatisation, it was painted into standard Rail Express Systems (R.E.S) red livery which it wore until its withdrawal in November 2002 and its eventual disposal in March 2003.
