Default Model Lorry / Half Size

Need to clear some space in the shed and this doesn't get used as much as it once did, children have grown and moved on to other hobbies and commitments.

We bought this some years ago from a gentleman who built it for his kids. It is based on and Austin A35, giving an approx width of just over 4ft this gave a scale size of just on half size for the model toy on which the truck was based. A Volvo dinky toy 1:87 scale.

The cab has been extended slightly over the original dimension in order to allow some to actually be able to drive it. Engine and gear box are from the A35, braking is on the first rear axle with a tee point for this to be extended to the rear axle.

The front axle is a Leyland Sherpa cut down to match the width of the truck, a transit steering box was used in order to utilise its lower ratio for the steering. Front springs are Morris Travellers rears with additional leaves to compensate for the engine weight with motorcycle shocks havingbeen added to provide additional support and dampening.

The rear springs are specials, due to their short length. The centre axle has much heavier springs than the trailing axle as the centre axles is currently the only driven axle (we have also removed a few additional leaves from the rear axle to increase the movement on rough ground) this helps to reduce wheelspin and lose of traction.

As noted only the middle axle is driven, a dummy drive shaft has been put in place between the axles to utilise the flange on the rear axle. We found it possible to make it 6x4 by mounting a diff drive pinion to the rear of the front axle then flipping the 3rd axle through 180 degrees to correct the rotation. The work to this hasn’t been fully completed, but all the parts are there, and we never had need of it, but a project that shouldn't be too hard to complete.

The rear deck can be removed by releasing six holding bolts. The head board is separate to the rear deck. This was in order to allow different bodies to be installed on the back, although never completed a crane and a wrecker were considered.

The lorry has been featured in Truck and Driver, and i believe this to be the September 2001 issue.

As stated above, the children have now moved on to other hobbies and this isn’t used as much as it could or should be, so it’s time for someone else to enjoy it.

The truck is running and was running in the photos, its recently had new distributor cap, plugs, leads, points and condenser as it had been left for while and needed doing.

Bad points

Needs a new ignition key switch (current switch doesn’t return when the engine starts keeping the starter motor engaged)
Some paint work damage were sign writing was removed
Couple of dents and scratches (which you’ll see in the photos)
Could do with a polish and a thorough clean!

Truck is approximately 4'4" wide by 12' long. Weight ? (at a guess about a ton)

An A bar is also included which allows you to tow the lorry behind your car/pickup/lorry, should you so which. This is installed to the front of the lorry just above the bumper. The trucks electrics wired through a trailer socket which is located just under the cab allowing you to connect the truck to your vehicle and utilise the trucks rear lights. Saves having to mess around with trailer boards!

A car transporter trailer is also included with the truck, please see photos. This has just had all new brakes and three new tyres. Only damage of note is that one of the lenses is broken and I think one of the side lights doesn't work, corroded fitting.

Price is £3,500 o.v.n.o
