I would say they were quite forgiving when it comes to being ignored for a really long time, where as proper coal I've found will just die, the Trevithic's and the Homefire ovals while looking like they were dead still held enough heat to re-lite some fresh or worst case light up a bit of wood.
This does make for an interesting shut down though as they seem to be able to hold a low level of heat for ruddy hours, I've even found the grate and ash pan to still be warm to hot the next morning when I've run on either, compared to regular welsh which is pretty much cold after just a few hours.

This is all on a miniature I will say.
