One thing you can do to lessen the dramatic effects of a drill grabbing is to grind parallel to the axis the first 1/16" inch or so of the drill spiral. This makes opening out holes, even in brass, a doddle. The top rake angle is all wrong for steel but the drill will still cut but it will not snatch anywhere near as much on breakthrough.
