It depends upon what it was used for whether or not it had a hand-pump on the side.

The mounting was always present, but the basic cart was supplied with additional fittings to suit various applications not all of which needed a hand-pump.

For example, those carts used for the transport and application of liquid manure would not have had a hand-pump (but there would have been some form of discharge apparatus at the rear).

This is why there are far more Baker 'water carts' around than there are Baker water carts with the hand pump present.

I have a picture (an advert), somewhere, of various Baker implements, all of which are based around the water-cart model but with small modifications tailoring them to various agricultural tasks. Only the bowser has the hand-pump on the side.
