Fowler Eccentric Rod
Folks
Does anyone know where there is a Fowler Eccentric Rod lurking? I need one to fit an R class or A4 but will consider anything in the hope I can modify it! Also, does anyone have a pattern for a Fowler Agricultural Flywheel? Off the top of my head I believe it is 4'6 with 5 spokes (Carl...please correct me if I'm wrong!!). Cheers Paul |

What do you mean by "eccentric rod"?
Do you mean for the pump? I have drawings for the pump and valve eccentric rods if these are of any help to you. Cheers Carl. |
Weidner; thanks - I only have a stub of the flywheel boss left and was going from (bad) memory!
Carl; thanks for the iffer, I actually have the pump rod but was after an eccentric rod for the valve gear. I did think about fabricating one (- have the other three)to keep costs down but I'm not sure if the weakness over a forging would make this slightly too iffy! P |
I shouldn't worry about fabricating if correctly done - this is the method being used on two full size recreations that I know of.
I have numerous A4 / R drawings - feel free to ask if you need something that I might have. Have you posted anything about your engine - as it must be similar to mine I am interested to learn more about it. Cheers Carl. |
You might machine the ends from solid and weld in the rod with a scarfed / angled welded joint . The original rods on many engines were made this way with bought in ends hammer weded onto the rod .
I am sure that you will be able to borrow a Fowler flywheel to cast one off . I can reccommend you an excellent foundry . |
Hi Paul
I've sent you a PM |
As Carl said, don't worry about fabricating your eccentric rods. Without doubt, Fowler rods are made in three pieces - the drawings I have of A/R series engines shows three separate part numbers for the fork, the foot and the rod itself.
With regard to flywheels, on traction engines up to 7HP they are 4'6" 8Hp and above they are 5' |
Thanks for this, looks like I have an eccentric rod to fabricate!
Cheers P |
Indeed the "Fowler " eccentric rods are made of 3 pieces.
I have made no compromise regarding forged components in the re-creation of "Onward". The eccentric rods , are as per Fowler drawings, Butt end, Rod and fork end. Have no issues with fabricating your new rod! Onward............. |
