These engines would be known as ' wrought iron 8's ' , from the wrought iron box structure which supported the bearings and shafts on the top of the firebox . The previous engines were the ' new ' ones , thus the surviving singles are all rebuilds of ' new 12's ' or ' new 14's ' . The ' new ' engines replaced the ' old ' ones , which were the horizontal shaft design . Previous to these were the ' slant shaft ' engines . |
