Steam Thrashing at Bardwell Windmill 23rd August
We will be Thrashing at the Mill this coming Sunday 23rd August. The wheat was cut a couple of weeks ago with a Massey Harris Sunshine Binder. We picked up our Marshall Drum last week from storage at the local farm and son Daniel has dragged out a Maynards Chaff Cutter which has not been used for many years (I've had it 12 or 15 years and never taken the sheet off till last week and was amazed to find an almost brand new drive belt laid on top!). Every one welcome, especially with any vintage steam or tractor car or WHY!!!
The bakery will be in action. Several vinatge tractors are promised with a model or two. Refreshments and raffle etc. Free entry, all proceeds towards the ongoing restoration of the mill. http://www.steamscenes.org.uk//ttu/00006063.jpg Collecting the Drum http://www.steamscenes.org.uk//ttu/00006064.jpg Delivering the Chaff Cutter 11 miles behind the Disco, 3rd gear low range! http://www.steamscenes.org.uk//ttu/00006065.jpg Check out progress on the new sails http://www.steamscenes.org.uk//ttu/00006066.jpg Cutting the wheat with the binder Hope the weather is kind! Hi Jonathan,
I see you managed to find a binder, what is it? |
Hi Dave
Binder is a Massey Harris Sunshine 5ft cut. It belongs to a young lad Andrew Shone who lives about 4 miles from the mill. It was his first time of using it. it took a bit of setting up as the straw is short and the heads are heavy. Its a wheel driven model so needs to travel at a fair rate to get the mechanism going, so could only take half a cut at a time. I would like to find a McCormick or International Harvester Binder, power drive, 5ft cut.. I am reliably informed they were the top model produced... Cheers JW |
I will lookout for one.
