Aaah a killer drill !
Most people who have tackled the two man drill single handed and lived to tell the tale live in fear of them ! However they can still be bought new from Milwaukee Tools, I have a Wolfe and a Milwaukee and am bloody petrified of them both but still use them when required.
The old ones appear in auctions every now an then but if you are desparate by a new Milwaukee and some body armour, mine threw me off the top of a plougher smoke box, accross the workshop and through a steel rack but I still use it...........

milwaukee drills

Thanks for the reply but the drills all seem to have chucks with them. What model is yours and does it have a morse taper?

The Milwaukee is available with taper socket, the drill has a tapershank arbour, loads of torque so play carefully

You certainly have to keep a tight hold. Getting yourself wedged in against the drill works well. If it grabs, which it will, it will try to throw you away. It is possible to keep hold of them if you are wedged against something. Definately not for the faint hearted or lighter framed amongst us. If you have air, a large windy drill may be worthy of consideration. They tend to be a little easier to control, and not quite so viscous when they grab.

can you not use a mag drill? Mine has a no.3 morse taper with a morse rotorbroach adapter and conventional chuck of 3/4" a very very handy piece of kit!

One thing you can do to lessen the dramatic effects of a drill grabbing is to grind parallel to the axis the first 1/16" inch or so of the drill spiral. This makes opening out holes, even in brass, a doddle. The top rake angle is all wrong for steel but the drill will still cut but it will not snatch anywhere near as much on breakthrough.
