When mine got to that stage we drilled and tapped a 1/4 BSP hole into the cap and fitted a pipe plug, then silver soldered a cross piece to the plug so it could be undone with your fingers. Easy and the old cap needs never to come off again. (You can loctite it on so a little heat will get it off if you need to).

Is the problem the thread on the central tube ,if so why not make up a new pipe, one way is to get length of brass hex ,put it in the lathe and drill a hole down the centre, and thread the ends, using hex allows the tube to be tightened with a socket spanner , most of these tubes have lots of mole grip marks where owners have tried to screw them in. Just made one this week for a Garrett.

I am preferring the re-cut thread option I do like Davids idea of gluing the lid on and fitting a bung ... but I know somebodies going to unscrew the lid at the wrong time ... |
How about solder the lid on? Means its a better fit but still reversible and someone shouldn't be able to unscrew it?
