Norfolk's antidote to big events
In the season of big steam events we're living up to the county motto of "Do different" with some small scale activity.
South Walsham Windmill Open Day This is a full size, new build, traditional Norfolk windmill - an amazing and beautiful structure - which is home to beautifully restored A&P 10T compound, piston valve roller no. 10695. http://www.tractiontalkforum.com/pic...ictureid=47692 Burrell 10T roller no. 3942 is undergoing the same treatment. http://www.tractiontalkforum.com/pic...ictureid=47694 Visiting was Marshall no. 54486 'Woodton Lady', owned by the Norfolk Steam Engine Club. http://www.tractiontalkforum.com/pic...ictureid=47693 Also visiting was this half size version of Burrell's smallest engine, their 3T 'Special Light Traction Engine' of 1898. (See drawings in Ronald Clark's books'.) http://www.tractiontalkforum.com/pic...ictureid=47695 It is dwarfed by Woodton Lady. (That's a steam drainage pump in the background.) http://www.tractiontalkforum.com/pic...ictureid=47696 Windmills give a good aerial view. http://www.tractiontalkforum.com/pic...ictureid=47697 The mill itself may not be steam, but it is a thing of great beauty and, I'm sure, would be of interest to many TT members. http://www.tractiontalkforum.com/pic...ictureid=47700 Lophams' Vintage Rally Sadly the organisers' efforts to initiate a new local 'do' were almost drowned out. I hope they'll try again next year. Well known local Ruston & Hornsby TE no. 113043 'Oliver', belonging to the Wheeler family, wearing its raincoat. http://www.tractiontalkforum.com/pic...ictureid=47701 It did dry up enough to uncover 'Oliver' and its saw bench. http://www.tractiontalkforum.com/pic...ictureid=47703 Two other participants were Fowell TE no. 108 'Percy', out and about this year for the first time after a 40 year lay-up and Burrell SRL no. 3833 'Queen Mary' from the Burrell Museum. http://www.tractiontalkforum.com/pic...ictureid=47705 Another picture of 'Queen Mary', not revealing what a miserable day it was. http://www.tractiontalkforum.com/pic...ictureid=47708 After Lopham 'Percy' roaded to Little Ellingham for their Vintage Working Show two weeks later Oiling-up ready to leave Lopham. http://www.tractiontalkforum.com/pic...ictureid=47709 Rear view of the Fowell. http://www.tractiontalkforum.com/pic...ictureid=47710 Out on the open road. http://www.tractiontalkforum.com/pic...ictureid=47712 And the not so open bits. http://www.tractiontalkforum.com/pic...ictureid=47711 Nice to attract interest. http://www.tractiontalkforum.com/pic...ictureid=47713 Going well. http://www.tractiontalkforum.com/pic...ictureid=47716 Thanks for the entertainment to all concerned. Hello Bill, lovely photos! Is the "3T 'Special Light Traction Engine' of 1898" your machine?
Cheers Chris H |

I'm intrigued by the New Build post mill, is it on the site of an original mill? does it have any 'Workings' in it?, does it use any original components? sorry for all the questions, buit it really intrigues Me

Dear Stephen,
It's a new site. The first thing Richard Seago had to do was construct the mound the mill sits on. The plan is to use it to produce flour, but the machinery is not yet fully installed. Original components from a number of mills have been used where available. For more details see:- http://www.norfolkmills.co.uk/Windmi...-postmill.html and https://www.facebook.com/southwalshammill/ It really is a thing of great beauty inside:- http://www.tractiontalkforum.com/pic...ictureid=47719 All the best, Bill. |
