More from Doort in Stoom

Thanks to Josh Menear for all his pictures. (Wonder if we saw each other?) Here's a few of mine - trying not to overlap. It's well worth the effort of going over to Dordrecht. Lot's to see - including a steam driven clog making machine - plus rides on tugs with triple expansion engines etc. etc. Friendly, informal - and tiring!

They tell me the name means 'Simmering pot' and they drive it backwards as it's easier to handle.

Note the Burrell SCC block, made under licence.

I know Josh posted a picture of JW's family outfit, but he's almost a neighbour so I couldn't resist another one.

great photos
is that a convertible garrett roller and do you have a works number for it?

Any info on the Foden in picture 8? Is it a new build type replica?

I would hazard a guess that lots of the castings pictured on the Sussex Steam Restorations Facebook page have ended up on it

Thecornishsteamenthusiast: the Garrett roller definitely appeared to be a convertible. I'm afraid I didn't record any engine numbers.
Aveling8727: I didn't see anyone to talk to about the Foden. It certainly looked a bit unusual to me. Can anyone on here shed any light on it?
You both make me realise I should have spent more time talking to people. Nearly all the Dutch speak good conversational English. Technical topics can be more interesting.
Only two years till the next time.
Bill.

Nice photos Bill, yes we probably passed without knowing!

Seb, the Garrett roller is indeed a convertible, number 28371 of 1910, more photos below.

Cheers, Josh.

ah thanks josh! what a cracking engine, and nice to see it kept in roller form too
google suggests it is based in a steam museum and pumbing station in Medemblik, holland

The Foden is a scratch build 6 tonner. It was made in a relatively short time by a retired engineer Mr Woltman who ran a successful piling rig company. I think he has made an excellent job of it considering the limited drawings and photographs he had to work from.

I first saw it two years ago at Mr Woltman's home when it was just a frame and boiler. I foolishly promised him a cake if he ever finished it.

It is still work in progress and he plans to change some parts.

Hedd is correct that the block and some motion work was outsourced.

Dordt-In-Stoom is an excellent event, for us as simple punters it beats Dorset hands down.

I'll post some pics when I have sorted them out.

We also went to visit the windmills at Kinderdijk, visited Eindhoven where I worked with DAF for a time and toured Delft and Scheveningen by the sea. All in all a great week.

Re Seb's mention of Medemblik, there's also the Hoorn - Medemblik 'Stoomtram', http://www.stoomtram.nl/en.

Wish I'd spoken to Mr Woltman - great cake too.

Bill.
