Baker Water Cart
 

I'm about to start restoring a Baker Water Cart. Looking for a hand pump for fitting to the of side cast end plate. Any information on original colours and specs appreciated.

I am also soon to begin a Baker watercart, well, finish off a part restored one, mine too is missing its pump, there must be many with this missing, probably the first part taken, or damaged, quite vulnerable up there! Mine will be painted to match the engine.

I have an original Baker No.4 Water Cart Pump for sale but mine comes with the cart as well.

It is a 180 Gall cart on original Baker cast & tyred dished wheels, cast iron seat and horse shafts as would have been originally fitted. Needs a complete repaint and a small amount of simple woodwork - footboard & cart props.

It depends upon what it was used for whether or not it had a hand-pump on the side.

The mounting was always present, but the basic cart was supplied with additional fittings to suit various applications not all of which needed a hand-pump.

For example, those carts used for the transport and application of liquid manure would not have had a hand-pump (but there would have been some form of discharge apparatus at the rear).

This is why there are far more Baker 'water carts' around than there are Baker water carts with the hand pump present.

I have a picture (an advert), somewhere, of various Baker implements, all of which are based around the water-cart model but with small modifications tailoring them to various agricultural tasks. Only the bowser has the hand-pump on the side.

MERL did have a lot of online pics of various makers in catalogues etc. This bears what Piers says.

One with an independant pump and two lengths of hose has always struck me as being very usefull. Suck the water out of a stream to fill the tank with the pump. Then pump it out of the cart into an engine, or trough or whatever.

Given you can buy a modern cast iron pump for the neck end of sod all Id be tempted to adapt one of these.

Thanks for comments, think I've found a pump. Hope to get to MERL in next few days to see what they have. Don't intend on using it behind my engine so shaking it apart not an issue. Think it's going to be Green but not sure about wheels.
