Young engineer at the throttle of a 23-90 Baker.. In the next photo you can see the top of dad's head who is sitting on the footplate. It is running a Baker fan, a device invented by A.D. Baker to test his engines.

As for pulling on the weight transfer sled, I'm quite sure they knew their equipment and how it would perform. John Holp is an excellent engineer. He is well aware of how that Advance will perform.

What would have caused the damage to the rear rolls on the Case?

Nice to see a different take on things from your side of the pond!

I'm not sure that is damage, but I don't want to speculate about their origins. I do know these rollers had an option for steel spikes. There is a 1940s photograph that could be this very engine and those pock marks on the rolls are there in that photo. You can find that picture in the book, Classic American Steamollers 1871 - 1935 Archive.

I think we met at NTA. This is the first time I've been to Darke County. I hope I can be there again next year.
