Somerset Traction Engine Club's New Year's Day Gathering and Road Run, Jan 1st 2013
 

A fine, sunny day - a change from the rain we've been having. A good turn out - probably about 400 vehicles and bikes in all. Three steamers - Mike White's Allchin and Aveling and Jerry Darch's Aveling. A few photos of some of what we had. Some new vehicles and unusual ones too.

Thanks JR for the photos. We ended up steaming the whole way home! The King of the road lamps worked quite well when steaming the last leg up the hills, we took em all in top gear!!
Rob/Nick where did you get to you set off so early?

As always a fantastic way to start the year and a great chance to catch-up after the winter! I can't compete with John's great photos, but there's plenty more on my facebook page for anyone interested.
Let's hope the dry weather is a taste of things to come!

Chester's a good engine on the hills - mind you she needs to be in your neck of the woods!! I gather Rob and Nick went over to the Westonzoyland Pumping Station. They were not back when I left, about ten minutes before I caught up with you.
Thanks for coming, and particularly for bringing the two engines. Chester has been noted as being the most famous engine to pass through West Monkton..... but don't tell the owners of The Gladiator, Cornish Maid, Princess Mary, Duke of Kent, Progress etc., etc., etc. (Forgot that our 50th anniversary road run in 2005 started from there). Incidentally, the first ever Taunton Rally in 1956 was in the field alongside the layby where you stopped to oil up, and to do , other things....

check the tire pressures ?

Yea that right how did you know Dumpy? The pressure was great on the wheel I examined!
Any photos of that lovely 1912 Renault?

the explorer is mine so thankyou both for posting , the matador is a 1942 example and at only its 2nd preservation event it went after the war to kent river board and used to tow a trailer with a small bulldozer only working pic is of it involved in a rta in kent involving a trojan van and the new body is based on that photo if anyone knows any more about it the owner will be pleased to here from you
