32nd Annual Steam & Vintage Rally, 12th August 2012
Our first visit to this one day event. After early rain the rally was blessed with a fine if rather muggy warm day. This vintage rally offeres a bit of everything from old cars, motorcycles & lorries to traction engines, steam powered saw bench, a miniature steam railway, fairground organs, a working horse display and steam ploughing to a superb bi-plane doing an excellent aerobatic display.
Met a few old friends and a few T-T members who knew me, but I did not know them until today. A great day out. The last time I saw these two parked together was at Birtley Rally in 1967 http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...t/DSCF9330.jpg New to North Riding County Council. Foden 'D' Type No. 13762 of 1931. One of 2 with consecutive registration numbers. The other being in Strumpshaw Museum. In the 1960s owned by M.D. (Monty) Thackray of North Yorkshire. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...t/DSCF9324.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...t/DSCF9328.jpg A&P GND tractor of 1920. "The Pirate" was new to Lanark County Council. In the 1960s rallied by Jack Wakefield of Hetton-le-Hole in County Durham http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...t/DSCF9316.jpg Wallis & Steevens 6nhp traction engine of 1903 http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...t/DSCF9317.jpg A&P roller dating from 1905 http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...t/DSCF9322.jpg American Advance Thresher 8nhp of 1906 Works No. 7891 http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...t/DSCF9332.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...t/DSCF9331.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...t/DSCF9346.jpg Fowler Gun hauling & winding engine No. 14950 of 1917. One of a batch ordered by the Russian Army but not delivered. Still with winding drum mounted under boiler caused comments from the public as "resembling a plougher" http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...t/DSCF9323.jpg Unknown. Not in program and do not have my TER with me http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...t/DSCF9334.jpg Merryweather Valiant fire pump of 1946. Demonstrated its capabilities in the main ring with a blazing bale of straw http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...t/DSCF9336.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...t/DSCF9337.jpg A&P 10 ton roller No. 10997 of 1924 http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...t/DSCF9338.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...t/DSCF9340.jpg Fowler 12 ton roller No.19053 of 1931. New to Yorkshire West Riding County Council where it stayed until moving to Wales in 1961. Like the roller above, it did not make it to the main display due to early rain and the muddy climb to the display area http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...9225of1901.jpg Fowler No. 9225 of 1901 http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...1343of1918.jpg Mann No.1343 of 1918 http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...t/DSCF9320.jpg Burrell 4" scale model of 2004 http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...t/DSCF9321.jpg Garrett 4" scale model of 1997 There were also some interesting Foden lorries there including http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...t/DSCF9333.jpg Foden 'S' Type of 1934 http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...t/DSCF9344.jpg Details unknown http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...t/DSCF9345.jpg Foden S80 of 1976. Having praised a very good one day show, I did think it a bit cheeky to have stewards at the car park EXIT gate stopping cars, shaking a black bucket under the driver's nose and asking to "Help the cricket club"!
WHY? I saw nothing in the program about any cricket club, so who were they?? |

It's been owned by the Miles family for many years now, probably 25yrs or so. Does not get out too often, possibly only this rally every year, maybe Kington show which is on next weekend. |
F.B.Atkins Foden S Type 1934 was fitted with a moving bed,not sure whether this was to facilitate tipping or a removable bed?
either way very early for the innovation. F.B.Atkins used to run a fleet of Atkinsons all immaculately turned out. |

either way very early for the innovation. It is fitted with a 'Principality' moving bed, manufactured in Cardiff. It's like a large conveyor belt, which discharges the load out the back of the lorry. The matching trailer which goes with it also has the same moving bed. |
