Steam Scenes 20th September 2011 07:59 PM

Austrian Dampffest

I have a friend in Austria who is very keen on ploughing engines and has sent me these pictures on a CD taken at an event which took place earlier this year in Austria. The ploughing engines are Heucke engines, very similar to English built Fowlers, and as you can see from the plate built quite late in 1928. It is quite rare to see steam cultivation taking place in mainland Europe so I understand so this was an unusual sight for visitors to the rally.

Also present at the event were the green Fowler Roller, Ruston & Hornsby portable and another brown roller which I don't know the maker.

D2 rollers are fabulous looking things arn't they?

weidner 20th September 2011 08:29 PM

I see that this one has the standard repairs to the roll head .

From the size of it I think that the lower plate on the front of the roll head may say PRAHA , indicating a sale through the Prague office ,

Yes I think D2s are gorgeous! I like the plates on the headstock as well.

Could the brown roller be from the same maker as the ploughing engines? The cylinder looks similar.

Great pictures SS, its nice to see that the Austrians can use steam on the road.

Not the case in France I understand.

The ploughing engine has interesting valve gear in an attempt to ge the valves parrallel with the bores.
Thanks for posting.

Many valve gears were developed for locomotives with the valves above the bores , so they had quite a choice .

Nice to see engines with a working day appearance and not 'over restored'.

How did the Heucke valve gear work?

If you zoom in close it says "Wein" (Vienna).
