Titanic: The Mission.
 

Hello everyone,

I thought this would be at home in this section. Well, it is a show, a TV show....

Has anyone seen this great programme yet? It's on Channel 4 at 9pm Monday nights I think. The first one was last week.

Basically a team of 'experts' are recreating parts of the Titanic's construction using traditional methods.

And whilst this is being done a perfectly good paddle steamer "PS Lincoln Castle is being scrapped in Grimsby.

Even her working triple expansion engines have been wrecked.

Back to the Titanic, another good programme (other than that girl having no idea how to use a saw!)

Oh I see! I missed that one. Sorry. Still, an interesting programme, despite all the usual showbiz faults.

You are right Jim, it's disgraceful. It would also have made good telly to follow the long term restoration of something as large as a paddle steamer.

Thoroughly enjoyed the anchor re-creation.

Yes, very good. Shame about the fact that they couldnt pull it with the horses due to H+S, which only serves to ruin everything that is good and interesting in this world.

I bet though they would have liked that tractor in 1910!

Did they not use the then equivalent 'high HP tractor' the steam Road locomotive to move large loads within H&W ?

I dont think they would have pulled it all the way with horse by that date unless it was a very short distance to the station but would have used a Road locomotive to pull such a heavy load.

I think in 1910 they would have had somebody who could have blocked it up properly so it would not fall over/ slide about in transit, that stack of timber placed under the neck was unsuitable for the job - H&S should have spotted that one earlier.:eek: Even the US building movers they keep showing on TV dicing with death with dodgy practices prop stuff up better than that, using a wide based stack of timbers (but then try and jack off the middle of a couple of 4x3's on top in several cases).


I noticed this weeks episode had more "good" H&S practices with the scaffold tower with no toe boards or hand rails during the 'errection' of the salon wall in the museum (yet if i went in there as a contractor and worked like that you can bet the museums H&S person would quickly stop me working). ! These TV production companies often think a hiviz-vest and hard hat makes a site safe. :rolleyes:

In general i think the series dose a good job of trying to 'educating' the public to the huge range of skilled trades and effort involved to create such an iconic project then and now and how thing have changed, but it also misses the mark for me in some areas of detail & the more i see the less believable it is that the 'cast' have actual done much of the work each week to create the items recreated.
