GDSF Early report...
Went to the Great Dorset on opening day, only chance we had. The weather varied from wet and windy to overcast turning to thoroughly wet later. Hopefully it will improve as promised for the main weekend, however, the black skies provided a good backdrop for pictures.
Mayhem in the playpen... http://www.davekearley.co.uk/linkpics/gdsf1.jpg http://www.davekearley.co.uk/LinkPics/gdsf3.jpg http://www.davekearley.co.uk/LinkPics/gdsf5.jpg http://www.davekearley.co.uk/LinkPics/gdsf7.jpg A bit more weight needing hauling... http://www.davekearley.co.uk/LinkPics/gdsf2.jpg As expected, the show was massive, plenty of trade stands, loads of food and drink fun for all the family! Just got back, literally, don't know why my computer was on!
Damp start with some very slippy mud, generally weather was good, but a patchy sky. Playpen was out of action in the morning (I'd guess because of ground conditions) but in the afternoon it was opened. By then the ground had dried out considerably, i could actually walk without slipping all the time! Good display, shame that they didn't go up the big hill. |
It looks a bit strange !, has it been fiddled with in the past ?.

No works number given. A second mystery is the "Swiss Roll" http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b2...er59951906.jpg Program lists it as Works No 5995, but it carries this plate http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b2...5995plates.jpg Now Works No 4932 Is listed in the TER as 1901 with an FX registration number. What is going on here? Had a good day yesterday, much like Thursday I guess, as no movement before lunchtime, but plenty after it. Good to see some Irish and Scottish engines I'd not seen before. |

Not a great picture, but was difficult to get a decent shot (for me, anyway) but this gives a flavour. The Saunders tractor on the front (The Tiger) was uncoupled shortly after this shot was taken. I hope your friend is ok. |
Whos was the third from the front, with the white canvas. Was it 'Onward'?
|
Yes, The Tiger, Mr Blower, Onward, & Lord Doverdale.
|
thank you for the pic, looked good, he is fine, but is out of action for a few months with a nackerd tendon in his leg.
saunders tiger is 'John Fowler' |

Great rally. On a par with last years Dorset i thought. Got to meet a few more people of here at the rally which was good.
|
Great time: Only 175ft of movie film and about 12 still frames to show for it - but a head full of memories that I'll treasure much more. :)

What is going on here? The number you have taken is the boiler number the other is the Swiss boiler registration number, the royalty number 5995 is on the cylinder block on the other side of the engine. Mike |
