I contact you regarding an opportunity to get involved with CarFest. The sell-out festival is the brainchild of Chris Evans’ and has wowed more than 400,000 visitors and are now firmly established as one of the summers most family-friendly festivals.

Most importantly, the events have raised a cumulative total of £8million for BBC Children In Need

This year we’re very excited to launch Steam World - an entire immersive area dedicated to steam power (it already has been mentioned several times on BBC Radio2). We have the world famous Carters Steam Fair building a 2-acre fair ground, where children can ride for free all weekend.

We would love to get an array of vehicles present, including steam tractors. With you expertise and knowledge, I was hoping you might be able to help

And I thought Dorset was an expensive weekend away. Weekend entry and camping £163 each :eek:

As previously reported, The National Traction Engine Trust have been asked to present a display at both of these events and we are currently talking to the team behind them on how we best go about it.

A friend had his engine booked in for this year...or so he thought. They then changed the terms of the appearance, who had to provide what etc.very close to the event and then it was not worth the effort to turn up.

Just make sure you get your 'deal' with them in writing before you commit.

Car Fest = EXPENSIVE

The idea of the event is to raise money for children in need.
So I would of thought being a few quid out of pocket did not matter.
Especially as it will promote steam as well.

3 days at Goodwood Revival is £10 more expensive and that's without camping.

It's one of those awkward things to quantify, I can't say that I don't attend charity events, because I do, but I have to, if you like., sort of square it with myself, do it to often and it becomes 'expected' and then you've made a rod for your own back. The comitment involved in getting ANY engine to an event is considerable, and no matter how you look at it, particularly if you need a crew you have to be able to justify it, even the most outrageous of classic car does not even come close. If it's an event that you will enjoy getting to, attending, packing up and getting home frm then fair do's, if not then don't. the most cost effective way for a charity to benefit from your engine is to leave the engine at home and give the charity the monetary equivalent to the comitment that attending would come to.

Some very good points raised Steven as you say it is a matter of choose its ok if you live fairly local to event maybe.

If Carters are going to be at Car Fest South, does that mean they won't be at the GDSF.
Heard Evans talking about getting them there a while back, but thought that they were probably settled at Dorset.
Anybody know the answer.

I thought Carters split there rides over the 2 locations, some went to Dorset, others went to Carfest, then each year swap/change it around which rides go to which location, keeps it nicely mixed up & not samey samey each year

For the past couple of years Carters have been open in Gosport over the bank holiday weekend. Last year they then moved to GDSF, this year they only took some bits to Dorset and left the crest in Gosport.

At the end of the day this is a commercially run event, all of the production staff and event suppliers will be contracted on a professional basis and will charge accordingly, clearly it is pure coincidence that the host is employed by the BBC and the chosen charity has very close links with the BBC, Car fest can be plugged continually on the breakfast show as a result of this connection.
Anybody attending with an engine will almost certainly be viewed as another supplier by those doing the production, these sort of events employ freelance health and safety consultants that can make life very difficult, I would advise anyone considering attending to charge accordingly, theres nothing worse than jumping through hoops at the request of a youth with a clipboard and ending up out of pocket for doing so.
I have worked as a supplier to the corporate event industry for over 25 years so know how things actually work, Children in need is a great cause , but dont sell yourselves short if you attend this event.
