Steam on Rutland Water, Saturday 25/6/2016

Here is my offering of this show from yesterday, my first time visit, very nice event plenty to see and do, was a shame that the dreaded wet came in about 3 o'clock. Well worth a visit if you haven't been, and a good location.
As usual, enjoy.

Amongst this set of photos there is a 3” scale Foden steam wagon. It is the green one with “A. J. Whirledge, Steam Haulage, Derby” sign written on the sides. Does anyone here on TT know the gentleman who built and rallies it? If I remember correctly, his name is A. J. Whirledge and he lives in the Derby area. I was talking to him at the Statfold “Do” and he told me of several improvements that although fairly minor, make the model much more usable. The particular mod I’m interested in is how he improved the pump. I would really like to send him an email; can anyone put me in touch? I am happy to give my email address in a PM if anyone can forward it or perhaps someone could ask if they can forward his email address to me... Whichever way, any help would be very much appreciated.

Thanks in anticipation.

Weeting is always worth a look Tiny, I think the show has come on leaps and bounds in the last few years, more reminiscent of how it was 15 years ago when I first went! :)

Andy Whirledge has shown his engine for many years in the Leicestershire/Derbyshire area and I gained a lot of advice from him, much of which I incorporated in my model and have described on here previously. He very kindly let me have a drive of his engine while mine was in its early stages, adding considerably to my enthusiasm!

He advised staying the pump platform to the wagon frame to stop it flexing and take stress of the riveted flange off the horn plate. I think he also suggested enlarging the bore as much as the casting would allow to reduce reliance on the injectors.

I don't have his contact details, so can't help but maybe the number on the side of his wagon could give a clue!

Hi John,

Yes, I had thought of the phone number on the lorry but I’m not that brave!

I’m sure the gentleman said something about an extra non-return valve somewhere on the pump pipework – I should have written it down because I think he said it made a considerable difference - hence trying to make contact.

I will send you a PM very soon as I want to ask you a couple of questions...

Michael

The 3" Foden Wagon is owned and rallied by Andy Whirledge of Repton, Derbyshire. If you want to direct message me I can put you in touch with him.
