NO5892 11th February 2016 01:01 PM

For steam enthusiasts, the specific element of the Great War Festival of Transport that is well worth going to is the Great War Steam Fair. The link to the event is http://www.beamish.org.uk/events/great-war-steam-fair/ and if rumours are to be believed, this years event will be rather special.

Here is a link for some photos from last years events, courtesy of the Bon Accord Steam Engine Club Facebook Page - https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?...2618362&type=3

And some more photos from Paul Cooks, Through the eyes of a Penguin Facebook Page - https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?...2911337&type=3

We will be there, so if you are coming along, please do come along and say hello.

Me too, counting the days, thinking of everything that's got to be done!

Timothy Hackworth Jr 11th February 2016 08:46 PM

I'm thinking of everything that's got to be done before we road up to the event. It's not long when I think I have to fit in a trip to Sierra Leone before as well...

Sierra Leone, roading on strakes - I's say you'll need a nappy!

Marshall Tractor 12th February 2016 08:57 PM

The Marshall & Trailer are making a return visit, looks to be shaping up to be one of the best yet. The Marshall was used during WW1 to haul supplies to the local T.A. camp amongst other things. Looking forward to seeing you all there.

I knew it was only a matter of time before the madness kicked in

Early Photos of the Marshall at work.http://www.tractiontalkforum.com/pic...ictureid=29174 http://www.tractiontalkforum.com/pic...ictureid=29173 http://www.tractiontalkforum.com/pic...ictureid=29172

Out of interest Neil,
Why the different back wheels in the second pic??

Marshall Tractor 14th February 2016 08:24 AM

The engine was supplied new in 1914, within a year a new set of rear wheels were supplied by Marshall's. I would guess that the second photo may be the earlier set, they have the outside of the T-ring removed for reasons unknown, I can't believe that they needed to reduce the width.. The other two photos are probably later and show the standard T-ring. The later set did not survive after the engine was running only as a roller for John Peter Jones. Someone said that they were probably used to reinforce a well capping.

Hopefully going to be camping in the area and dragging a couple of mates along for their first steam rally.... I can't wait!!

sparkright 18th March 2016 05:33 PM

Just warn them that any normal steam rally will be nowhere near as good.

Make sure you come and say hello

Beamish Open Air Museum

This is a fantastic place to visit and everyone so friendly. Dressing in period costumes and seeing how life, schools and pastimes have changed - no mobile phones, televisions etc.
Have a great year this year and hope to see you next year with the roller.

NO5892 22nd March 2016 06:35 AM

We were loaded last night and all set for the Great War Steam Fair, it looks like there is going to be a fantastic line up of steam and internal combustion machines.

If you see us on site, please do come and say hello.

Lovely looking traction trailer. Any more photos?

NO5892 23rd March 2016 06:26 AM

John, Sadly not, its owned by the Cheyne collection, its a Fowler and its only recently been restored. Cheers J

UJ2225 24th March 2016 10:51 AM

Isn't it Phil Wings old engine? I thought she was restored some time ago or has she just had boiler work etc done?

Jim

NO5892 24th March 2016 03:29 PM

Jim, it used to be owned by Steve Wing, it then passed to Preston Services, and then moved to Aberdeenshire. James

Cygnus X-1 25th March 2016 09:27 AM

Just a word of warning for anyone staying overnight in a caravan or worse still a tent, it can be bloody freezing! So bring plenty of extra bedding etc. and make sure your gas bottle has some gas in it, you wouldn’t be the first to turn up with an empty bottle!

Steamhead21 5th April 2016 04:54 AM

Can I second the above post.
I used to attend Pickering every year with caravan was cold even in July/Summer.
I made the mistake of not checking the electrics in caravan once and arrived to find lights water pump not working had to buy a
torch on showfeild.
Worth checking generator as well if you are taking one .
I used caravan oven for heat .
If you arrive for weekend at Beamish and need grub etc Chester-le-Street & Stanley are both very close by.
Stanley has a 24 hour asda.

Arfursteam 8th April 2016 10:32 AM

Heading up north for this event, leaving this afternoon for a hotel in the area and then on to Beamish tomorrow, look forward to saying Hi to TT members

Arthur (a fat penguin)

Bosiboz 8th April 2016 11:17 AM

The area does tend to have its own little micro climate. Looks like it's getting cold this weekend. Look at the overnight 'Feels' like temperatures particularly Saturday night / early Sunday morning (-13C) so wrap those engines up well!

I've never been to Beamish, & it seems to have come on a lot in recent years. This looks like a good do, reminds me of when we used to go to the Black Country Museum in the 80s , or is it better than that? I loved the atmosphere at the BCM , especially in the pub!

Trevor 2 8th April 2016 06:15 PM

They are much of a muchness- just different flavours.
I love both.
Beamish allow dogs in which helps.

David, I don't know where you had this from but it's a lot more pessimistic than the Met Office.

Metcheck - I've usually found their forecasts to be quite reliable

Arfursteam 10th April 2016 10:30 AM

Had a good time, weather was not a predicted, not bright sunshine all the time but no rain thankfully.

Ransomes AM54 10th April 2016 10:52 AM

I did spare a thought for folk staying in vans at Beamish at 4.00am this morning as I scraped ice from the car windscreen in Salisbury - some 300 miles further south..!
