Kivells Vintage Sale - 10 Oct 2015

Just been over to Kivells sale at Dingles this mornin. I couldn't stick around to see the roller and portable sold but I'm sure somebody who was there will post prices here.

A lot of interest in Aveling & Porter 2018, originally a Mowlem owned engine then spent the rest of it's life in Leicestershire before going to current owner in Bristol who has owned it since the 70's:

The most interesting lot to me were these plates off Burrell Gold Medal Tractor, 3375:

This was in interesting engine, I have this picture of it when it was with with original owner E.H. Jones of Newton undertaking war work in Wales:

It was then sold to showman Elias Stokes in Southampton who fitted dynamo bracket and full length canopy and renamed it Tarzan, it had further owners after this and was cut up very late on in 1957 in Hampshire.

I don't think you would want to do much roading with it but if you want one of the oldest, most interesting rollers on the rally field it is the one to have.

Best not speak too soon but there were a few big hitters there this morning so I might guess where it is headed to if it sells.

Old soft single, right up my street.

But like you say you'd not get very far in a day on it.

But it would be a good day all the same.

The Victorian rollers have beautiful lines. Really must get mine done......

aveling looked lovely, spent most of the day ticking over, went to 30k
marshall was around the 1200 mark I think

It would be lovely if the roller came back to Leicestershire. Or at least could join the line up at Quorn at Easter with the other Leicestershire rollers. I well remember seeing it at local rallies in the late 1960s.

Those old avelings trundle along a treat. Not fast but lots of fun on the road. Look forward to seeing her out again soon.

Gone to Rob Rymer so I've heard, so to a good home. Well done that man! You could put her in a mock up of an old photo & not notice the difference , truly the mark of a good restoration.
Also the portable to Mark Fellows , well done again Mark!

Agreed, it reminded me of this old picture of a similar A&P that I have:

The picture was taken in Debenham in Suffolk. The plate from what I can make out is Suffolk County Council 312.

UJ2225 11th October 2015 08:16 AM

No often you see a roller with a licence plate fitted. Somewhere I have a picture of an Essex County Council roller built in the 20"s fitted with one (and after the enamel licence plates were done away with). I have often wondered why...

This should provide something of a bench-mark for the recent 'how much is a roller worth' threads.

triumphman 11th October 2015 02:30 PM

Sensible price. Good for those saving up

10 ton 12081 11th October 2015 07:10 PM

I would be very happy with both engines at the price. That's the best thing I like about auctions shows the true market price

That would still be excluding auctioneer's mark ups/fees I assume. Would there be a fee for buyer and seller in this case?? Never been to one of these auctions.

In this instance 5% + plus VAT on that. So £31800 would be what was paid.

Fee for seller would be between them an auctioneer I suppose, varies between auction houses.

Did the aveling tractor get withdrawn?

Any idea what the minatures went for? I didn't go in the end - too much temptation to buy rather than build!!

Sparkplug 14th October 2015 07:10 AM

Also wish I had known about the Burrell Plates. So I guess if we had all been there, the final price would have been considerably higher!! I may then have been in serious trouble with her in doors!!

Steve

I asked Kivells, they didn't reach their reserves. Althought they couldn't tell me what the reserves were, I asked if the 2" was around £3k and the 3" was around £7k, I was told I was about £2k under on both. Seems they were high reserved? but i'm not familiar enough with minitures to know if I was under valueing or the reserve was about the market price.
