Alan Thomas Memorial Road Run 2015

Honouring and remembering the great man today with the 5 yearly road run around Porthtowan and up ‘Engine Hill’.

The weather didn’t really play ball with amber weather warnings for torrential rain but at least the climb up the hill remained fairly rain free.

Some pictures from this morning:

This occurred right in front of where we were standing, on the very steepest part of the hill.

Jim and his crew acted in a very calm and professional way. (Although the roller rear wheels weren't chocked, the trailer brakes had been applied).

a lot of these Mini Macs down here in cornwall...are they selling them at Trago ?

Proff 15th August 2015 07:38 AM

Yes, buy one get one free, it's there 50th anniversary deal :p

Had a brilliant day on Thursday down in Cornwall helping with Excelsior. The weather at times was atrocious, which made the turnout of engines and spectators all the more impressive. The highlight for me was being involved in the heavy haulage up Engine Hill, and experience I won't forget in a long time! Many thanks to the Daniel brothers for inviting us to help them out on the hill.

Here is some on-board footage to give you a sample of what it was like. It took so impressive driving to clear all the traffic at the top when you consider the length of the road train!

If Trago's were flogging those Mini Macs I'd make sure I was their 50th customer in on a Sunday morning. Apparently you get 50% off whatever you buy.

Stefan If you mean when I had to change gear, I can assure you the rear wheels were chocked.

avelingporter 17th August 2015 02:31 PM

Reports from my crew who were stationed on the hill right next to your unforeseen stop said that they were impressed with the speed and ability of the crew to change gear, and using all of the chocks. Shame the owner let them down with too small a fire at the bottom of the hill !!! ;-p

Sorry Jim. I didn't see the chocks used but was very impressed with the speed of your crew in getting off the engine and braking the trailer. Obviously others were also impressed; did you hear the ripple of applause when you set off?
Stef.

Err no! Is there a video of this? I new we would have to stop so I pre warned Joe my steesman . What happend was my own fault as we were delayed at the bottom of the hill on the road which joins the main hill road , so I put the injector on to stop her blowing off & then was distracted & forgot it was on!

Josh Menear 18th August 2015 01:06 AM

Great photos as always David but you seem to be missing a certain Burrell roller!! :(

Cheers, Josh.

What I saw was an excellent and smart executed gear change. Must say I was very impressed on how how quickly and smartly the wheels chocked and the trailer brake applied. No fuss no hassle just 2 skilled engeinemen well on top of the job
Well done
Jim
