Had quite a chat with Mr Gilbey while the Simplicity was recovering pressure after the rigors of roading to site. First time out for 20 years.

MG 18th July 2015 07:59 PM

Oh my gosh! I new Mr Gilbey had a simplicity but never been lucky enough to see anything of it, always seen his other engines over the years and my father said he'd seen the roller once (but he doesn't get the appeal of them!)

MG 18th July 2015 08:07 PM

sorry to ask a lot of question but how far did they take her on the road?? what was it like after all these years?
I think there cracking little engines (would love to get the chance to drive one, one day)

Great selection of photo's by the way looks a great event

YYS4BOB 18th July 2015 08:16 PM

Roaded from Masham. Had injector problem, but that was was all far as I know.

MG 18th July 2015 08:37 PM

oh would have been lovely to see, not bad after all the years in the shed, very much hope this will be the start of this engine getting back out and about, from the public's point of view a very interesting exhibit much more than just a roller

My mate Ken roaded one 12miles. I wouldnt fancy Somerset to Masham on the bugger

Steamed 3 miles down to Masham,Struggled to get back up 2 mile hill home, but managed with Ted's help. By Sunday injector worked perfectly. Lively and great fun to steam. Will be out at Hunton in September.

Yes it is.

notyalc 19th July 2015 08:38 PM

A delightful little roller.

MG 19th July 2015 08:59 PM

Many thanks for all the info, anyone know if there are many differences between the prototype and the other's, be great to see all the uk ones together one day

00000 19th July 2015 09:15 PM

surely the tube ends are out of the water at the top end? does this give problems? Small boiler though for going any distance, Ill bet that lovely old Aveling dosnt have steaming problems, look at the size of the boiler on it!

From memory, the production version had a slightly different smokebox and headstock (the bit that holds the fork). Then some of the later ones (but not all) have a fore and aft fork which isn't so good looking.

Proff 20th July 2015 05:40 PM

I have a feeling that you cannot take the prototype one out of gear but all the subsequent ones you could.

keepoffthegrass 20th July 2015 06:03 PM

good to see the sir john William out and about

Black Sheep 20th July 2015 06:28 PM

Different headstock to later simplicites, but can take out of gear.

MG 20th July 2015 08:14 PM

Many thanks guys, cracking little engines in my opinion

Snail Trail 21st July 2015 06:49 PM

Great to see another simplicity out and about. Would be good to get the two of them back together some time.

sambate 22nd July 2015 07:16 PM

An excellent rally with a great selection of engines - always nice to see some new ones. Masham was celebrating its 50th anniversary.
