New Steam Rally in Cornwall.

Cornish engine owners and steam enthusiasts will already be aware of this, but I know that there will be others visiting the South West who will be pleased to have the opportunity of a very early steam fix.

The first St. Dennis Steam and Vintage Rally will take place over the Easter weekend, April 4th and 5th. The venue is St. Dennis, in the heart of 'clay country' about 2 miles off the A30 close to the turn-off for Newquay. Sat Nav PL26 8DT.

The rally will feature full-size and minitature steam, tractors, vintage cars and motorcycles and stationary engines. Entry forms can be obtained from Ian Lobb on 01726 822275 or 07959 6578453. Alternatively visit 'St. Dennis Steam and Vintage Rally' on Facebook.

The rally will be opened by Martin Oliver, who will be on-site all weekend doing some public talks and Q and A sessions.

At a time when we hear of the demise of several established rallys, I hope that the steam community will support this new event.

Stef.

Just so happens - Devster, Essex and myself will be in that neck of the woods so a visit on Sunday is most likely.

Anyone fancy a pint?

UJ2225 29th January 2015 06:31 PM

We will down at Easter so will pay a visit.

Good to hear of a fresh rally.

Jim

Well done Stef. Though I wont be ready I dont think.

Triton 29th January 2015 11:36 PM

We shall be there and I personally would like to wish the rally organisers every success for two reasons. Firstly, having the confidence to present a new venue but, above all else, having the foresight to hold the rally over the Easter period instead of during the main Devon and Cornwall rally season which basically runs throughout July and August. It will be good to have a early season rally for a change.

pedlersmateslad 14th February 2015 08:57 AM

Shame I won't be back from travelling to get to this... Next year!

Triton 15th February 2015 12:08 AM

Just received my copy of Old Glory yesterday (Saturday) and in the Events Guide on page 11 there is an entry for this rally. personally, as I said before I am looking forward to it and I will spread the word.

Thanks Brian,

So you not bringing the Steam Yachts to Royal Cornwall Show this year, June 4th, 5th and 6th?

You should find a couple of road engines at the BODMIN RAILWAY if you call in.

Jeremy,

I am aware of several Cornish engine owners who have either entered or requested entry forms.

These guys are all active TT members. However, I would prefer not to put out information which may be incorrect.

Maybe those concerned will make their intentions public on this thread or alternatively send you a P.M.

Oh, and by the way, I am not involved with this new venture in any way. I am pleased to be able to publicise it on this
forum because I am passionate about our hobby and steam preservation in general.

Stef.

Come on Steve, the Cornish no longer eat tourists from Devon as they say that they are not good for their health!! I shall be going on one of the two dates as I wish to see what it is like to have a Easter event down here.

The latest information I have is that 9 full-size engines are booked in.

It would doubtlessly benefit the event if the other engine owners/crew were prepared to state their intention to attend.

Stef.

Triton 23rd March 2015 11:38 PM

Besides the nine full size engines which are booked in (a good number for a new rally!) are there any miniatures going to be present?

Sorry Tom, I can't answer that. I only know about the full-size engines after I bumped into Ian Lobb a couple of weeks ago.
You could always try ringing him; his number is in my original post.

solheim 24th March 2015 07:52 PM

I would of booked my miniture in but I had no transport, and now I think it's abit late to book it in.

Info for anyone comming to see the steam then beware, only one roller has got onto the site ! After overnight rain last night and the rain today, parts of the site are like a ploughed field ! The problems for us engine owners is the entrance, which at this moment we have NO chance of getting through, and even if we get in, where to go ? as the engines spaces are the other end of the field !!!
Going to review tomorrow morning before lighting up !

There is a message on their Facebook page posted yesterday saying the event has NOT been cancelled, but nothing after this. I'm assuming they are still going ahead in some form - if anyone knows anymore please post here.

David, event is still going ahead but with little steam present, we are taking the Maid out for a run on the road tomorrow as we have no chance of getting in the field.

Steve.

Sounds like a long drive for me if theres only roller, i was supposed to be leaving now and popping in on my way to a job down there. If there was 9 booked where are all the 8 ?..... tucked up at home still ?

Steam Scenes 4th April 2015 10:43 AM

Some pics from earlier on Facebook, there appears to be only one engine on site.

Hi all, Me and a friend went to this rally this morning for a few hours so here are a few photos. As has been said there was only one engine, Aveling & Porter roller 'Bess'. The mud was well over a foot deep in places.

We will be steaming to the site tomorrow morning, leaving St.Columb at about 10 am i guess, we are going to stay out on the road outside the exhibitors entrance,

Steve,

Enterprise 4th April 2015 08:43 PM

Shame about the mud, the committee have worked really hard, we were unable to attend this year engines not quite ready, anyone in the area tomorrow there will be 2 or 3 engines in steam in our yard getting ready for our steam test next week

chris s type 4th April 2015 09:25 PM

i was going to take my roller over but saw the conditions in the field on Friday and new it was not a great idea to travel over just to get stuck in the mud.
went and supported the rally this morning.
the sun came out just as i left at lunch time :)
lots of people still coming through the gate.
i hope they get a good turnout on Sunday.
i'm now driving roller from St Columb to Blackwater on Sunday
getting closer to Camborne for Trevithick Day at the end of the month

Triton 4th April 2015 11:50 PM

I was intending to attend and my grandson and myself were looking forward to the event. As it was we saw the mud warnings on TT and decided to stay at home as it is a round trip over 100 miles for us and being disabled I certainly would not have been able to get around the rally field in those conditions - it reminded me of Boconnoc in 2010. I feel sorry for the organisers as being on a rally organising committee in the past, I know how much hard work goes into organising such an event.

let's hope that the weather will be kinder next year.
