Lincoln 2014

I spent the day at Lincoln on Saturday and came across this Aveling & Porter 8679 , not seen it before although I believe it lives in Linconlshire .
Am I right in saying this is a convertible and does anyone have any history of this engine '

I believe it is one of a pair of similar engines , convertables , new to East Riding CC . It has made several appearences at Lincoln through the years .

Hasn't been out for about 15 years and yes is convertible.

iain 18th August 2014 06:57 PM

And it lives just outside of Lincoln.

tiny 18th August 2014 07:08 PM

you both beat me to it, only thing I can add is it came to Lincolnshire around 1990

Cygnus X-1 18th August 2014 07:19 PM

I also came across a really nice Marshall which I seem to remember seeing at Pickering a few years ago , although it now looks in tip top condition .

According to the programme: "1916 Aveling & Porter 8679 (BT 8812) New to East Riding County Council. Exhibited in its roller form for 2 years. Due to cracking in the headstock casing it was converted to a traction engine. Owner: Steve Corston, Lusby."

Looked like it had been dragged from a hedge backwards, quite literally!:D But looked to have oil in all the right places and running ok.

tiny 19th August 2014 01:05 PM

you have it Paul, I have nothing to add

I didn't take many photographs unfortunately, but did get this shot of my two favourite engines (yes I'm biased) together in the same scene, very reminiscent of 60's rallies.

Interesting to see the clack and pump on the same side, and the routing of the pipework over the top of the scroll... I don't think I have seen this before. Original or a later mod?

The Marshall Tractor 'The Hermit' i believe won a best in show (might not be correct wording but you get the idea) at Weeting this year, moved into the eastern counties region in the last few years or so i've been told.

I seem to remember that Firebar's Aveling has some funny pipework , perhaps the same ?

sparkright 19th August 2014 06:05 PM

Really enjoyed our first visit. Lack of movement didn't really matter as there was so many engines I'd never seen before to go and look at.

Did anyone get any photos of the Saturday night run to the Dambusters Inn? What a brilliant atmosphere.

My Aveling is exactly the same. I have always assumed that it is to keep potentially vulnerable boiler fittings away from the belt to the drum or the sawbench.

Sorry for the lateness in posting, but some photos from the Saturday.
