Thanks for the great set of pics ! Probably a dumb question, does most o f the case engines have superheaters, hence the looong smokebox ? Cheers chris |

No superheaters on the Case engines. All the newer Case engines have the longer boilers for longer tubes and the extra heating area. The smoke boxes on most US engines are similarly long. The Feed water heater on the outside is standard on all Case engines. The Baker Co did offer a aftermarket super heater that could fit in the smoke box of most engines.

I've read that the long smoke box was designed to discourage larger sparks from going up the stack.
