Thought about it, looked at the list of trade stands (very few really), so going to spend the time in the workshop instead.

Went today.
A few trade stands: RDG, tracey tools, college engineering, noggin end metals, myford, plus a few general tool stands.
Good selection of models, three 4" burrels in steam outside. Steam Apprentice Club with their Burrel.
Interesting room full of 3D printers making stuff from vases to casting patterns.
Lots of stirling engines.

Not too crowded so worth a day out if you arn't too far away. (£10 adult entry)

Very well done to Steve and his gold medel Burrell. Sorry to say he was robbed from gold to get silver. But a credit to you.

If Steve only got silver WHAT got gold?

rick 16th December 2013 06:01 PM

A v12 petrol tank that was in the same class. Don't get me wrong a very nice tank and looks great fun. It was in the model road class.

FosterGP6NHP 16th December 2013 06:31 PM

Any pics as i am sure others would like to see the winner.

s2steamy 16th December 2013 07:06 PM

I was told that I just lost out on the gold because I did not make the boiler or the tyres?? *cry Looks like I will have to get a large autoclave oven for moulding tyres!!

http://www.tractiontalkforum.com/pic...ictureid=14891 Well said. I must admit the v12 engine was very nice (even tho it did break down). But not in the same class.

JasonB 16th December 2013 07:55 PM

And no doubt the turret is made from prototypically correct armour plate as well.

A few photos of Steve's stunning 6" GMT at the ME which surely deserved a Gold Medal.

And the guns are scale fully working weapons with the correct armour piercing rounds for the main gun!

So why do i not enter my engine in a competition class at the Midlands show? answer you are at the mercy of possibly biased judges who put a model that only looks correct externally over another that is spot and uses true to prototype materials, but has comercially fitted vulcanised tyres and a professionally made pressure vessel.
Some years ago at IIRC Donnington an absolutely beautiful standard BR 4MT tank was discounted in the competion class it was in, because the castings were comercially available not home made castings/fabrications or chomped from solid, the builder had even made his own scale size and face detail vacuum & pressure gauges, as well as all the other boiler fittings. My thoughts were that somebody had actually shrunk a full size engine down with majic, such was the accuracy of the minature to the prototype.

While not for or against the judges decision, the carcass for this tank is in fact a commercial kit.

Dave chatted to the bloke and had to shake his hand as the workmanship in building the running V12 and gearbox from scratch was he said second to none, but I do believe the kit (main body + wheels and tracks) is an Armourtech one as Dave has the same one in the workshop.

I missed the show *cry
