Goldsmith Nov 2013
Few picks from another great weekend down under.
Feel free to add yours if you have any to share. They have a nice pair of ploughing engines that come out and play when the weather is good. Not a huge plough but plenty big enough to show how it was done. http://www.tractiontalkforum.com/pic...ictureid=14273 http://www.tractiontalkforum.com/pic...ictureid=14274 http://www.tractiontalkforum.com/pic...ictureid=14275 I like this one Beauty and the beasts ? http://www.tractiontalkforum.com/pic...ictureid=14276 Couple of close ups of the 2 Fowlers. http://www.tractiontalkforum.com/pic...ictureid=14278 http://www.tractiontalkforum.com/pic...ictureid=14277 |
A little something for the Portable Engine fanciers.

Do you have any engine numbers for the two ploughers.
Great photo's Thanks |
What class are they? I thought Zs, but they have Salters? Lovely portable, very unusual.

Alas I don't usually collect numbers. Just enjoy taking pictures although I did get the Garrett details.
No doubt someone watching will know the details of the Fowlers. Here is a couple more of the Garrett. http://www.tractiontalkforum.com/pic...ictureid=14305 http://www.tractiontalkforum.com/pic...ictureid=14304 http://www.tractiontalkforum.com/pic...ictureid=14303 Here is a Clayton Wagon and an Aveling and Porter Roller to enjoy as well. http://www.tractiontalkforum.com/pic...ictureid=14302 http://www.tractiontalkforum.com/pic...ictureid=14306 |
This should also interest some.
A Cowley Compound Roller. http://www.tractiontalkforum.com/pic...ictureid=14307 http://www.tractiontalkforum.com/pic...ictureid=14308 http://www.tractiontalkforum.com/pic...ictureid=14309 |
Here is another machine that took my fancy.
Fantastic restoration. I like all the extra features these guys added like the clutch. Look at the extra bracing on the back wheels to take the torque. Not sure about to tool box above the drivers head. Could give you a surprise on a rough road. http://www.tractiontalkforum.com/pic...ictureid=14336 http://www.tractiontalkforum.com/pic...ictureid=14337 http://www.tractiontalkforum.com/pic...ictureid=14338 http://www.tractiontalkforum.com/pic...ictureid=14339 http://www.tractiontalkforum.com/pic...ictureid=14340 http://www.tractiontalkforum.com/pic...ictureid=14341 |

Sadly, I can't remember the numbers! Cheers |
The Fowler PEs are both Z7 class built 1920.
15505 (with the wood canopy) is called ‘Archie’ and as I understand is on loan to the Lake Goldsmith Preservation Society by the Victoria Museum. 15504 (with the white canopy) is with a private collector. Neither is from their original pairing. Their partners both scrapped. New to the Water Conservation & Irrigation Commission. If you know more please let me know. Does anyone know the number of that plough? |
Thanks Dick for the information, greatly appreciated

I know this isn't exactly steam but there are a couple of steamers in the background and it does use steam to work the cooling system.
http://www.tractiontalkforum.com/pic...ictureid=14353 The Navy was in attendance and as usual they appeared to have a great time. Not sure how far they came to get there. May have had their low loader hidden down the road a bit or may have driven all the way from Melbourne. http://www.tractiontalkforum.com/pic...ictureid=14352 Not sure if this qualifies for a flat type. Perhaps he is still saving up for the other one. http://www.tractiontalkforum.com/pic...ictureid=14354 All who attended had a great weekend. Well most. http://www.tractiontalkforum.com/pic...ictureid=14355 |

surely if they were a genuine pair they would have the same safety valve and gear selector arrangement? as the Z7 with the salter safety valves has a different cylinder top to the other engine. Who knows?
|
Remember that it is possible that 15504 was paired with 15503, and 15505 with 15506!
|
There's also George William (14660) at Cobdogla, and Black Bess (14661) at Swan Hill Pioneer Museum. George William made a welcome appearance at Lake Goldsmith's 100th Rally.
Engines Susie-Jane (15499) and 15500 are at the MSTEC in Melbourne (15500 is owned by the club). 15505 was sistered with 15506 - http://museumvictoria.com.au/collect...-z7-class-1919 And a sweet video from ABC TV Weekend Magazine. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Tw-Ho0yYRw |

15505 is the Scienceworks/Museum Victoria engine, with the more traditional timber canopy without side boards and a long funnel. Ably manned by Dave, Peter and someone I don't recognise! The other Z7 in the photos is of 16720 built 1926 and worked in Tasmania on hydro schemes from 1953 (which is why there's photos of 16719 and 16720 in England). It was noted that the conversion to oil firing was completed by McLaren's works in Leeds. The balance plough is 11462 of 1914, used for the Murrumbidgee irrigation scheme. From memory, 15499, 15500, 15505 and 15506 were all purchased by the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Authority with one other pair. These details are in many of the Lake Goldsmith Rally programs Cheers |
