Scud being cautious !. ;)

Great little rally , very close and intimate with the public . Nice road run to boot and as for security not a problem. So take as you find and I will be back next year
|
Excellent, and got mr tube brush in focus! :-) Both days were good weather wise, couple of light showers today. As Allan says, no trouble either.
Saturday was really busy too, 2 quid charge did no harm, in fact think it helped. |
Was Brian Morgan's showman's engine finally in steam or is the coal between the back wheels just for effect?
I was unable to attend with 'Blackbeard' due to being at Old Warden with previous commitments but looks like you got the good weather up north while I buggered off down south and got cold and wet. |

That Aveling roller is interesting, I spoke to the chap at Dorset, a piston valve engine with a 14xx headstock, now my hearing is not perfect, 20 years of Aveling ownership! but I,m, sure he said that it was ordered for export with a heavier front end, thus the non standard front end, does that mean they were already casting those headstocks, and is this the first Aveling with one?

Scud Above is the man you want to ask....
|
Yeah, scuds the man to ask
|
The roller in question was sent out to Australia in 1924, With the big front end, for rolling asphalt, hence the better weight distribution. They must have started casting these later style headstocks, and just picked one up off the shelf and used it. It came back to the uk a few years ago and has been in steam for about a year now. :)
James ;) |
is that why the rear rolls are so thin James?, for the weight distribution?
|
I presume so, yeah. And the fronts being so thick
|
I thought it had a 'donated' front end from a modified soul.

Still have a few issues as it was one of its first outings in steam. The crank makes a heck of a thump when turning, so I think the right-hand bearing is misaligned...job for the winter. All the best, Brian |

Dave, never give up your day job! It might just be a waste of petrol going up to Scotland when you do your stint at the Edinburgh Fringe...:D (and I offered to include you in our chip run on Sat evening) All the best, Brian |
