Piston Valve Rings
I am not sure if there is already a thread about this, but if there is, I am unable to find it. I am looking for a supplier of piston rings to fit the piston valve on an E type Aveling Roller, a rough idea of price if possible would also be helpful.
Thanks, George. |

Clupet are in West Cumberland , so may be a bit snowed up at the moment . |
I didn't think you can use Clupet piston rings in a PIston Valve Bob?

did you have any joy mate? |
The owner of the engine sorted it themselves in the end, they got someone local to make them. However, I did ask Basil Jnr and he give me a very reasonable price so would be worth trying him.

Bradford piston ring company.
Clupit's are not all they are cracked up to be. |
Yes you can use Clupets in a piston valve, our Advance has run for the last 20 years with them with excellent results. BUT you have to be very careful when fitting them, the tails can catch in the ports and, as I found out, and you end up tying the motion up in knots. From what I remember of Aveling valve bores they have an abundance of ports and would not be able to take a Clupet ring. I have had very good service from Alan Smith at Clupet and as said above he does ordinary rings as well.

Yes , just to make the point , the Clupet Piston Ring Co make all sorts and sizes of ring , not only those of their own patent design . The Clupet patent ring is very flexible , and so accomodates a worn or irregular bore much better than a normal ring .
The Clupet patent rings look as if they would be a problem to fit to the piston , but because of their flexibility they are in fact easy to fit . I had a very pleasant surprise when I fitted mine . Rings can always be pegged with a bronze peg in the gap to prevent them from rotating , so as to ensure that they cannot catch in ports . |
Precision products in Poole Dorset, they will make any shape/size of ring you want. They make all of ours for the railway.

Ordered rings from clupit end of November and not been able to contact them since. Have now organised another supplier so if clupet do turn up will send em back!
