Not many Aveling rollers were supplied with diffs . , and those that have them will be keeping them . You could get one made , but it would be very expensive indeed , because bevel gears are awkward things to cut or to profile . What sort of an Aveling roller are we talking about ? Most of them are not worth the great expense of a new diff .
Remember that diff gears were cast from patterns which were probably supplied to Avelings by specialists who made gear patterns . Fowlers seem to have bought in gear patterns . Added to this is the cost of a diff centre pattern , and different final drive gear ring to bolt to the diff centre . Once Avelings had the patterns then the cost of a steel casting for an individual gear would not have been inconsiderable , depending on whether Avelings did their own steel castings , many engine builders did not , including Burrells pre WW 1 . By and large bevel gears on our engines could only be made economically by casting them , tho' diffs for double drive engines would have been cheaper . |
The 14000 series Avelings were fitted with spur wheel differentials, something like a giant Austin Seven unit, as were D.G. Sentinels, whether the differential was standard or fitted to order on these rollers I wouldn't know.

Just a bit curious as to what engine you've got. I've got an 8ton aveling with a diff currently in bits if you want to measure mine up or if you want any pics.

Ive got a ruston proctor portable. Which im turning into a self moving portable/traction engine. I inteed to use a set of aveling rolls, for the rear drive wheels. WHICH I HAVE and the plan is to come of the crankshaft at the FRONT of the engine, with a big chain down to the backend and thats where I NEED SOME HELP. sorting out the gear arrangement. As i dont know where to start.
The work ive done on her uptp now... ive had to make YES MAKE MYSELF... ANEW FIREBOX RIVERTED A NEW THROATPLATE A FRONT TUBEPLATE NEW HORNPLATES THESE ARE NOW LONGER TO ALLOW FOR THE AXLE AND GEAR SHAFTS STEERING BRACKETS REPLACED LOADS OF RIVERTS OH AND AFAIR FEW VISITS FOR THE CODED WELDER I am going to make this look RIGHT. So if anyone could give me a hand to sort these gear/ drive mechanism. I would be very greatfull. |
Sounds like it would be easier to just buy a roller and restore that, but good luck. Don't think you would need a diff for such a contraption.
|
Why do you need an Aveling diff ? Surely any traction engine or roller diff would do, or even a direct drive gear. I would suggest that for what you are doing, just fabricate something and adapt it from whatever you can find. Fabrication is fairly easy if you have the correct tools. Castings or buying original parts is a little different and expensive. A chain from the crank to a diff will not work on normal circumstances anyway. Gears don't mix with chains.

If i wanted a roller. Then id would. But this is what i am doing. I want it to look right. As for the diff. I intend on doing alot of road work thats why lm looking for one. Anyone know of anyone who could come and have alook at the gear arangement?
