I went over to the Vintage Gathering at the Northampton and Lamport Railway this morning to see the first public steaming of Allchin roller 1131:

Sharon Skinner and the crew have worked really hard to get the engine back up and running in a relatively short space of time. The steam test on the engine was only completed at 11.30 on Friday night! The engine was in a really poor way when work started, lying in undergrowth in many pieces, and major work has been carried out to the boiler and tender amongst other things. As always there are a few more jobs to do but the engine was steaming well and trundling around the rally site.

What a lovely looking roller, and very tastefully restored.

My only negative comment would be about the whistle position, is it where it should be ?

Hi Phil, As we have no pictures to show where the whistle should be positioned, do YOU know where it should go? As it has to have an audible warning for the boiler inspector to pass the roller, the only place we could find was by the manifold, and it was a good sounding whistle as well.

Hi Mike,

If the girls had not provided the funding and fought hard to get it, this roller may never have been back in steam, It was the STEAM TEAM (guys and girls) thanks. We are hoping that we may be able to sort out an Allchin Gathering, just imagine if we could get all the Allchin's left in existence on the same field on the same weekend, and also to go around to where The Globe Works in Northampton was originally sited, it would be a magnificent tribute.

I dont think the question was aimed at me but on Fosters of the same age the catalogue pictures from the Foster catalogue shows the whistle very close to the regulator handle and if there is no tapping in the block but there is a tapping near the regulator then where does the whistle most likely go?

Early Marshalls have whistle in same place.
Not sure why the boiler inspector has to have an audible warning device thats a road traffic requirement i think. bulb horn or bell on steam tractors and wagons

There is a works pic in Middlemiss/Sawfords Allchin book on page 46 (bottom) that shows 1453/4 with a whistle in the same place as 1131....

Allchin 669 that i help look after also has its whistle in the same place as yours!
