Belvoir Castle - 19 May 2012
Rain made an unfortunate return to Belvoir Castle today after several years of good weather previously. I understand it rained all night and this turned the site into a bit of a mud bath and stopped all engine movements. Never-the-less there was much to look at and several engines were making their debut at the event.
A small selection of photographs that I took. Ruston Hornsby 122282 arrive yesterday after a good journey by road: http://www.steamscenes.org.uk/tth/12...6-DSC_5850.jpg Fowler 19356, which has undergone recent restoration and one I have not seen before: http://www.steamscenes.org.uk/tth/12...8-DSC_5797.jpg Ransomes Sims & Jefferies 20760 which was recently sold and moved to Leicestershire: http://www.steamscenes.org.uk/tth/12...8-DSC_6011.jpg Sentinel 9084 which I have not seen at a rally since Belvoir Castle in 2004: http://www.steamscenes.org.uk/tth/12...3-DSC_5676.jpg Aveling & Porter 5163, a first time appearance at the rally: http://www.steamscenes.org.uk/tth/12...0-DSC_6019.jpg And a few more: Burrell 3926: http://www.steamscenes.org.uk/tth/12...1-DSC_5754.jpg Fowler 9271 http://www.steamscenes.org.uk/tth/12...6-DSC_5967.jpg Fowler 15441 http://www.steamscenes.org.uk/tth/12...1-DSC_5979.jpg Fowler 16433 http://www.steamscenes.org.uk/tth/12...1-DSC_6003.jpg Garrett 33566 getting a tow: http://www.steamscenes.org.uk/tth/12...3-DSC_6060.jpg Foden 13138 http://www.steamscenes.org.uk/tth/12...0-DSC_6088.jpg Foster 14589 http://www.steamscenes.org.uk/tth/12...2-DSC_6173.jpg The view as a left the site this afternoon: http://www.steamscenes.org.uk/tth/12...6-DSC_6178.jpg |
You have your fowlers mixed up David. That's not 9924! It's actually 9271.

They do share a shed, and look very similar, so it's an easy mistake to make!

I always see little green patches of good ground under engines at muddy rallies, funny what you see.. Looks a good rally. :-)

I would think it is just where the ground hasn't been trampled on, or poached I think the term is.

Well we had fun getting out. Got off the feild ok but there was loads of mud on the road going up the hill we were sideways a lot of the time but kept it going. Then out on the road there is a steep hill to negotiate. We'd cleaned the wheels as best as we could, but there was mud on the road and starting to go down it was slipping so chocked up and waited for a tractor to come from the site to act as an anchor. Just wasnt worth the risk as its a long old hill! makes you see the advantages of rubber tyres!

Well done Tom - looks great!

Great pics! Shame that the weather spoilt the fun (or maybe added to it?!?:D).
Was this a successful rescue? Quote:

That setup was to connect the unit to the trailer. We were mid way through extracting another lowloader when a big tractor came, so we let him pull the lorry out. |

Those tyres may not look attractive on engines, but when wet they do the job perfectly! Wonder how many were surprised at just how far they got before getting stuck? And even then, it was only about 10 ft from the road! |
Great photo of Thistledown (5163) shame my ugly mug was on the footplate, any chance I can purchase a copy?

http://www.steamscenes.org.uk/tti/12/099_0106.jpg Cheeseroller & I had a very good run there on the friday, 42 miles in 11 hours with three water stops to fill the tender and cart from 2cubes on my uncle's trailer. Rocket power was provided by Andy Holmes' Welsh steam coal! A few problems raised their head as would be expected on an engine that's not been on a long run since being dismantled - all of which was sorted at the roadside without a huge amount of delay. Great images, fairly local but unfortunately couldn't make it - that Yorkshire steam wagon looks wonderful
