Wybunbury Fig Pie Wakes

Sat 16th June in South Cheshire, Usually have 3 - 4 engines. All are welcome. Those that have been recon it's a good day out. The event starts at 1:00pm and pie rolling starts around 3ish. Both pubs are open this year and at least one of 'em is holding a beer festival.

It is a good event. Plenty going on. I posted some pics last year. The fig pie rolling is a bit of English eccentricity that's worth preserving.

It clashes with a few other events but there's 2 days in a weekend so we will be there.

Where/what is the event held at David !.

We don't have anything on that weekend as we have not booked every weekend like before for this year...so could be a good day out !.

The event is held at in the village of Wybunbury (Pronounced Winbury). The village has a leaning church tower, just the tower remains. There are two pubs. If you want to enter the fig pie rolling I believe you need to buy a recipe and get an entry form. The pies are solid, about 8 inch diameter. Contestants take turns to roll the pie down a hill and the one which travels the greatest distance is the winner. Some of the Shropshire lads turn up and partake of the local waters and you can climb to the top of the tower and watch Morris Dancers frolic on the lawn. It's a bit like a May Day with pies. It's somewhere between the A500 and the A51, near to Nantwich. If you put 'Wybunbury Fig Pie' in your search box on the PC, you will turn up some information.

The hill is steeper than it looks, I remember the back wheel of the penny starting to rise up one year, not a good sign........

8_10 Brass Cleaner 15th May 2012 04:56 PM

davy 15th May 2012 04:58 PM

If you put CW5 into a sat nav it will get you close. Not only shopshire lads turning up - a good number from South Cheshire and one from the upside, sorry.... downside (I assume Mr sawman is going to help empty the odd barrel again.

buzzy bee 15th May 2012 07:18 PM

I was descending the hill at the time, a few years back now...

more importantly
Lat (WGS84) N53:02:44 (53.045533)
Long (WGS84) W2:26:59 (-2.449665)
gets you to the bar in The Swan.

I think we shall be elsewhere Mark, or it would have been 7.8 miles from the Marshall to the bar. 45mins I recoln.

Are you joining us this year then?

Sams Boy 11th June 2012 11:14 AM

Last count 4 Engines are turning up - 2 in my yard already. Thwaites are sending their dray - someone on the organising committee thought it would go well with the engines - hmm. best hope the 'osses are blind and deaf. I think Mr Bee is going to try and somersault his penny farthing down the bank again as well.

Steaming North 11th June 2012 11:30 AM

Where's Mr Bee's engine?

Sams Boy 11th June 2012 12:18 PM

Good question!

buzzy bee 11th June 2012 05:19 PM

Mr Bees engine is in Shropshire. I think the penny might appear, but not too sure about the hill......

Steaming North 11th June 2012 07:00 PM

Is there a pond in Wybunbury ?. i would pay good money to see B.F try and mount a penny farthing, and even more to see him try and ride past a pond !!!!.

His legs wouldn't be long enough!

I managed 6 foot on dads before I fell off. Believe me its a long way down.

Broken Firebar 11th June 2012 07:22 PM

I can assure you that I won't be trying after my last encounter with a penny farthing at Bishops Castle!!!! ;)

Did you open you wallet ?.

:)

Broken Firebar 11th June 2012 07:29 PM

All I will say is that it was a Basil creation and that I had to borrow a welder .....

Mind you, his track record with Penny Farthings is not that good!! ;)

Steaming North 11th June 2012 07:30 PM

It was a good job those pigeons flew past the next morning.

LOL, he snapped the frame clean in two. Then had v8Spiders 'man' welded it back together the wrong way round!

It was nearly the funniest thing I have ever seen.

his legs were too long for that one.

Broken Firebar 11th June 2012 07:33 PM

The previous welders attempts weren't that clever..... :p

I'm off to lie down in a darkend room to gather my thoughts !. *think*think*think*think

:)

buzzy bee 11th June 2012 07:38 PM

Hmmm, I am not liking the idea of penny lessons based on all of the above, she is quite a fine specimen, built for lightness and racing!! She also has the equivlant of a 56/58" wheel, due to the saddle I use.

I will get the Mk1 out one day for everyone to have a go, that is easier to repair, should there be an "accident".

I think you should have said when there is an accident.
