Selection of pictures I took at Welland today. I have not been for a couple of years, I had forgotten what a big event it is, many thousands of visitors were on-site today with engines attending from far and wide.

Disregard the fact that my video is rubbish, I've put onto YouTube warts and all.

At Welland the following McLaren bout took place - In the blue corner we have New Zealand Double Crank Compound 1242 and in the red corner Cornish Tandem Compound 897:

Terrible thing to do to your engine!!!!

nice to see the engine built as maclaren intended won against the cornish creation obviously maclaren couldn't be improved. i was supprised as i'd have thought colossus was heavier therefore getting more traction?? possibly the compound couldn't stall so easily so had a better pull. interesting in my brief look round friday that the extra cylinder on colossus didn't look to be jacketed. i wonder how much use it actually was?

John Winters is a compound with two cranks in the crankshaft (DDC in Burrell nomenclature), and the power strokes would be less lumpy. I suspect that the 'smoother' power would make it less likely to pick its feet up, smoother being a relative term of course!

Similarly whilst them earthmover tyres are about the ugliest things you could ever put on an engine, they seem to grip well on anything, opened out fork truck tyres only seem to grip well on tar or stones, not so good in fields.

It would have been more interesting to see them with the diffs locked thumbsup

Not if it is in half decent order and you do not do it every day . The engines were built to withstand the maximum torque which they could develop , otherwise they would have been self destructing , and no use to anyone .

It is interesting that , unlike other builders of road engines , McLarens did not have separate draught straps , but the draught was taken through the tank . I have never heard that they were any the worse for this .

I pulled the back coupling of a Mc Laren couple of years ago.

And I was there to see it..

All I can say to people who object to this use of engines is that it is owners choice and 200lbs is never more than 200lbs.

I had a great weekend!

Big macs were quite impressive to see in action, (all drivers of said engines taking the engines to thier capabilitys with utmost care). The NZ Mac was not to be messed with at the rally, stayed out of the way with our little fowler.

Had a great weekend, plus the trip too show and home on the road with engine. thumbsupthumbsup

Home 1882's Head has recovered, as was not looking good Sun morn.
